(Mishnah): If a sharecropper (in Chakirus, meaning that he must give a specific amount of produce to the owner each year) received a field from his friend and (at the end of the year) he did not wish to weed it; if the sharecropper said, "What difference does it make to you, if either away I will give you your fixed amount?!'' - we do not accept his claim, because the owner can respond, "Tomorrow you will leave and it will grow weeds!''

If a sharecropper (in Arisus) received a field from his friend and the field did not produce (as he had expected, thereby causing the sharecropper to be unwilling to continue working the land), if the field produced enough to be able to make a pile, the sharecropper must continue to work the land.

R. Yehudah: Why would it depend on that?! Rather, (he must continue only) if the value of the produce covers its production expenses (lit. 'enough to fall').

(Gemara) - question: How much produce is 'enough to make a pile'?

R. Yaakov bar Idi citing R. Yehoshua ben Levi: If there is enough produce that if he (piled it up and) inserted a pitchfork, it does not fall down.

R. Abahu citing R. Yosi ben Chaninah: Enough produce that when he lifts with the pitchfork, it covers the handle.

R. Yehoshua ben Levi: Aside from the expenses of the land-owner or the share-cropper.

R. Yosi ben Chaninah: Aside from the expenses of the land-owner and the share-cropper.

R. Abahu: (R. Yehudah's statement in the Mishnah) 'enough to fall' - refers to produce that would provide enough seeds to sow the field.

If a sharecropper received a field (in Chakirus - that the sharecropper would give a certain amount of produce per year) and it was consumed by locusts or high winds -

If the region was struck, the sharecropper may reduce his payment and if not, he may not reduce it.

R. Yehudah: If he had agreed to give (a certain amount of) money, he may not reduce his payment.

(Gemara) - Rav Huna: (When the Mishnah taught that he may reduce his payment if the region was struck, it refers to) when all of the fields that surround his field were struck.
