What was Moshe supposed to 'command' Yehoshua?

1.

Rashi: He was to inform him that Yisrael were troublesome and stubborn 1 and that it was on that understanding that he was to assume leadership over them.

2.

Ramban #1 and Moshav Zekenim #1: To dedicate himself on their behalf with regard to fighting their battles, to bring them into battle and to return them safely, and to judge them fairly. 2

3.

Ramban #2 (citing the Sifri in Va'eschanan): "Tzav es Yehoshua" ? 'al D'var Talmud (with regard teaching them Torah she'be'Al Peh). 3

4.

Ramban #2, Seforno and Moshav Zekenim #2: He initiated him into the position of leader 4 before their eyes, so that they 5 (the Sanhedrin and the elders of the people) should accept him as their leader and obey him.

1

The Ramban objects to this explanation, since ro do so in the presence of the people would cause them to rebel.

2

Ramban: So that they should trust him and obey him - Just as Moshe himself did, as the Pasuk testifies in Devarim 31:7, 8.

3

See R. Chaval's footnotes. See also Ba'al ha'Turim.

4

Ramban: As we find in Nechemyah, 5:14 and in Shmuel 1, 13:14.

5

Seforno:.

Rashi writes that Moshe should inform him that Yisrael were troublesome and stubborn? It is not proper to say so "le'Eineihem" (in front of them)?
