 DAF DISCUSSIONS - ZEVACHIM 10
1. HG asks:

'Chozrani Chalilah'

What deeper meaning or logic meaning does this lashon mean.... I see it is elsewhere? Why used?

HG, Monroe

2. The Kollel replies:

1)The Gemara Pesachim 48b also uses the phrase "veChozeret Chalilah". Rashi explains that "Chalilah" is from the word "Machol" which goes round and round.

Machol is a dance.

2) I would like to refer us to the Seforno on Shemos 23:14 where the pasuk says "3 Festivals 'Tachog' for me in the year". The word Tachog is related to Chag. We have 3 Chagim.

A chag, or a Machog, is a circle.

Seforno writes that the Chagim are the opposite of what happened when Moshe Rabeinu came down from Mount Sinai "and he saw the golden calf and the dancing" (Shemot 32:19).

We celebrate Yomtovim as an atonement for the Golden Calf. The holy rejoicing, and "dancing round" that we have on Yomtov, is a kaparah for the misplaced rejoicing for the Eigel Hazahav.

3) Possibly this is also related to the Hebrew word Chalil; the flute. The name of the last chapter of Tractate Sukah is the "Chalil", because the flute was the chief musical instrument used in the Simchas Beis Hashoeva. It may be that one of the reason it is called "Chalil", is because the playing of the flute encourages people to dance in a Machol.

4) So this is the meaning of Chozer Chalilah; it goes back on itself again and again; round and round.
