 DAF DISCUSSIONS - SANHEDRIN 97
1. Barry Epstein asked:

Iyun Yaakov says that one who doesn't lie will live out his full years even if he doesn't otherwise merit it. What if he also commits one of the 3 cardinal sins?

Barry Epstein, Dallas, USA

2. The Kollel replies:

Obviously if a person performs a deed for which he can be punished by the court (or if he is a Rodef and can be punished at the hands of man), no merit will redeem him. The Iyun Yakov is referring to a person who is supposed to be punished for his sins by Hash-m (e.g. Kares or Misah b'Yedei Shamayim). Sometimes Hash-m will forego the intended punishment due to a person's deed of great merit.
