DAF DISCUSSIONS - BERACHOS 42

Yisroel Dovid Berger asks:

Earlier on brochos daf 35b 7 lines from the bottom, Rav nachman bar Yitzchak asks Rava about being kovea seudah around wine. Rava says this is abnormal and we'll wait for Eliyahu hanavi to decide. But on daf 42b 5 lines down the gemara says we ARE kovea a seudah around wine. And the gemara repeats this a second time a few lines later by saying that when one leaves a bathhouse or blood letter he is also kovea a seudah around wine. I don't understand what's going on? Is one kovea his seudah around wine or not?

The Kollel replies:

Dear Yisrael,

Daf 35b means that there is no such thing as a meal based on wine. The main part of a meal (which a person eats 2-3 times a day) is bread and flour products (although a person might choose to eat other solids to fill himself) but wine is never the main bulk of a meal.

All the Gemaras of Kovea on wine mean a meal where wine accompanies the bread etc., like on Shabbos and holidays, or to strengthen him after bloodletting or the bathhouse.

All the best,
