DAF DISCUSSIONS - YOMA 2

hg schild asked:

Question on Tosfos Yom Tov to Middos 5:4... what is he saying there regarding the separation for Yom Kippur and for the parah as in Yoma regarding wood, etc?

hg schild, ny usa

The Kollel replies:

The Tosfos Yom Tov is discussing why the Kohen Gadol's room is called Lishkas ha'Etz? He gives his own answer as follows: We find that the Kohen who did the Parah Adumah was separated for 7 days in the place called Lishkas ha'Even (stone). Stone was used since it cannot receive Tum'ah, and for the Parah there were special Tum'ah precautions.

The Kohen Gadol was separated for 7 days before Yom Kipur, but in a different area. That area is called Lishkas ha'Etz since it, not like the Lishkas ha'Even, could be built with any material, including wood. His separation was to contemplate his upcoming Avodah on Yom Kipur.

All the best,
