DAF DISCUSSIONS - SUKAH 10

Jacky asked:

i now the question is not timely or has anything to do with Hanuka, (except for the little oil bottle part :))...

in Suka 11a(i think) the gemara tries to bring a raaya that the decorations can be big and are not mafsik, the gemara answers on amud beis that theres no raaya become maybe they were placed on the side...

one of the things the gemara mentions is grapes, oil, etc... my chavrusa told me hes heard of people that hang as decorations a litlle wine bottle, a litlle water bottle and a little oil bottle... ive never heard of this... why is it? have you heard it?

thanks a lot!

The Kollel replies:

Though I have never seen nor heard of such a custom, it is clear that these liquids share the fact that they are the only three (permitted) liquids that are brought as part of Korbanos, or by themselves, on the Mizbe'ach. The wine and oil are used in Nesachim (libations), and on Sukos water was also poured on the Mizbe'ach. I would venture to say that such a custom might have been established (especially) on Sukos, as this is the time when all three are brought on the Mizbe'ach.

All the best,

Yaakov Montrose
