If [a master] blinded both [his slave's] eyes at once, or he knocked out two of his teeth at once, he goes free for [both of] them [and he does not get paid]. If he [blinded or knocked them out] one after the other, he goes free for the first, and [the master] pays him the value of the second (like one who damaged a Ben Chorin).

(R. Ila citing Reish Lakish): This is like the opinion that [if a master knocked out a limb of his slave,] he does not need to write for him a Get Shichrur. However, according to the opinion that he must write for him a Get Shichrur, do you say that he pays him?! (Until he gets a Get, he is still a slave!)

Question: I know only a slave who goes out due to a tooth or eye [that his master knocked out, that he needs a Get Shichrur]. What is the source for one who goes out with a [special] cap or ornaments (that only free people wear) or a royal decree to free him? (ALEI TAMAR - if a slave married a Bas Chorin in front of his master, this is a proof of freedom (below 23b; the Bavli (40a) says so also if the master put Tefilin on the slave), for slaves do not do so.)

Answer: "L'Chafshi Yeshalchenu" - in any case/

Question: What is the status of children [of one who goes free, but he needs a Get Shichrur]?

Answer #1: One who goes out due to a tooth or eye, his children are slaves. One who goes out due to despair, his children are free.

Rebuttal (and Answer #2 - R. Yosi bei R. Bun): The opposite is more reasonable! One who goes out due to a tooth or eye, since his freedom is from the Torah, his children are free. One who goes out due to despair, since the Torah did not free him, his children are slaves! (AMUDEI YERUSHALAYIM - slaves are considered land, and despair applies to land only mid'Rabanan.)

(Beraisa): If a convert died (without heirs), and Yisre'elim were taking his property (which became Hefker), if the convert owned adult or minor slaves, they went free;

Aba Sha'ul says, adult went free, but minors did not go free.

Question: What is the reason [why minors did not go free]?

Answer: They did not go free through their master's death.

Question: If so, also adults [should not go free through their master's death]!

Answer (R. Ba): Adults, since they have Da'as to acquire themselves, they go free. Minors, since they do not have Da'as to acquire themselves, they do not go free. (We explained this like GILYON EFRAYIM.)

(R. Yehoshua ben Levi): The Halachah follows Aba Sha'ul.

Question: R. Yehoshua ben Levi contradicts himself! There, R. Simon citing R. Yehoshua ben Levi, and R. Yosi ben Sha'ul citing Rebbi, said that one who despairs from his slave may not force him to serve him, and here he says so (that minors are not free? Above he did not distinguish minors from adults!)

[And further, R. Yochanan heard, and said 'R. Yehoshua ben Levi taught me well! Does the Halachah follow Aba Sha'ul?!

Answer: R. Yehoshua ben Levi said [above] that one may not force him to serve. [However,] he must write for him a Get Shichrur. Perhaps [you can infer] that the Halachah is, one may force him to serve?!

[Minors do not go free because they need a Get Shichrur, and] no one can give to them (for the master died. We explained this like MEICHAL HA'MAYIM.)
