SUMMARY

1. If there is one entrance to the steps which lead from one floor to another in a house, only one Mezuzah is required. If there are two entrances, two Mezuzos are required.

2. A house which has four entrances requires four Mezuzos, even if one entrance is used more than the others.

3. A Mezuzah must be placed on the right side of the doorpost.

4. If an entrance has only one doorpost, it requires a Mezuzah, according to Rebbi Meir. The Chachamim disagree.

5. The words of a Mezuzah must be written with ink on parchment.

6. All four Parshiyos of Tefilin are essential. If even one letter from one of the Parshiyos are missing, the Tefilin are Pasul.

7. The four Parshiyos of the Tefilin Shel Rosh must be written on separate parchments. Each one is placed in a separate Bayis.

8. If the four Parshiyos are written on one parchment, there must be a space between them, according to Rebbi. The Chachamim disagree.

9. The four Parshiyos of the Tefilin Shel Yad must be written on one parchment and placed in one Bayis.

10. According to Rebbi Yehudah, the four Parshiyos of the Tefilin Shel Yad must be attached. Rebbi Yosi disagrees.

11. If one has two Tefilin Shel Rosh and no Tefilin Shel Yad, he should wrap a piece of leather around one of the Tefilin Shel Rosh, and then he may use it in place of the Tefilin Shel Yad.

12. Tefilin Shel Yad may be made into Tefilin Shel Rosh, but not vice versa, because the Tefilin Shel Rosh have more sanctity. It is forbidden to lower an item's sanctity.

13. If the Tefilin Shel Rosh has never been worn, it may be made into Tefilin Shel Yad, according to the opinion that designation is not significant.

14. The Parshiyos of the Tefilin must be placed in the Tefilin in the order in which they are written in the Torah, in such a way that they could be read from right to left by a person standing opposite the wearer.

A BIT MORE

1. If there are four walls and entrances on both the bottom and the top of the stairway, a Mezuzah must be placed on both doors.

2. The Gemara earlier states that if one entrance is used more frequently than others, only the one used frequently requires a Mezuzah. However, that ruling applies only when the less frequently used entrance is used by only one person. In this case, all of the entrances are used by all of the residents.

3. When one enters a house, he extends his right foot forward first, and therefore he is closer to the right side of the entrance when he enters into the house.

4. However, even according to Rebbi Meir, it requires a Mezuzah only if it has a right doorpost, but not if it has only a left doorpost.

5. The words of a Mezuzah may not be etched onto a stone and then placed on the doorpost.

6. Every letter of the Parshiyos of the Tefilin must be surrounded by parchment on all sides. If even one letter is not surrounded by parchment on all sides, the Tefilin are Pasul.

7. However, if all four Parshiyos are written on one parchment and placed in four Batim, they are valid.

8. However, the Chachamim agree that a string must separate the Batim. If the division between the Batim is not discernible on the outside, the Tefilin are Pasul.

9. If the Parshiyos are written on four separate parchments and placed in one Bayis, the Tefilin are valid.

10. Rebbi Yehudah retracted his position and accepted the position of Rebbi Yosi, who says that Parshiyos of the Tefilin Shel Yad that are separate are valid.

11. By wrapping leather around the Tefilin Shel Rosh, he makes it look as though it has only one Bayis, like a Tefilin Shel Yad.

12. The Tefilin Shel Rosh have more sanctity, because the letters Shin and Dalet on the Tefilin Shel Rosh comprise the majority of the name of Hashem. The Tefilin Shel Yad include only the letter Yud.

13. According to the opinion that designation is significant, a Tefilin Shel Rosh may not be made into a Tefilin Shel Yad, even if had not yet been worn, unless it was originally made on that condition.

14. If the order is reversed, the Tefilin are Pasul.
