BRIEF INSIGHT
A SHTAR FOR PIDYON HA'BEN If one writes to a Kohen, "I am obligated to give you five Sela'im," he must give the money, but his son does not thereby become redeemed. Tosfos says that he is obligating himself with this Shtar to give five Sela'im. According to Rashi, the Shtar does not obligate him, but it is an admission that he is Chayav five Sela'im. (Sefer Hafla'ah)
QUICK HALACHAH
PIDYON HA'BEN If one writes to a Kohen, "I am obligated to give you five Sela'im for the Pidyon ha'Ben," he is obligated to give it, but his son does not thereby become redeemed. If one promises to a Kohen that he will give him the money of his Pidyon ha'Ben, he may not retract, but if he does retract it is a valid retraction.
