SUMMARY
1. The Gemara explains why Tzelafchad inherited a double portion in Eretz Yisrael from his father, Chefer.
2. Rebbi Shimon ha'Shikmoni: Moshe Rabeinu knew that daughters inherit fathers before he asked Hashem about the portion of Bnos Tzelafchad.
3. Moshe Rabeinu also knew, before he asked Hashem, that the Mekoshesh (the one who was desecrating Shabbos) should be put to death.
4. The Gemara praises the daughters of Tzelafchad.
5. The Bnos Tzelafchad married at the age of 40, since they could not find anyone suitable before then.

A BIT MORE
1. Even though a firstborn does not receive a double portion from property or possessions that will eventually be given to his deceased father, Eretz Yisrael was considered as something that Bnei Yisrael already had, since Hashem had promised it to them before they left Egypt.
2. His doubt was merely about whether their father deserved the portion of a firstborn (as in #1).
3. Moshe did not know which death sentence the Mekoshesh should receive, as the verse merely states, "Those who desecrate it (Shabbos) should be put to death."
4. The Gemara says that they were wise, learned, and righteous.
5. Even though a woman who marries for the first time after 40 does not usually bear children, since they were righteous and acted for the sake of Heaven, Hashem miraculously gave them the ability to bear children.
