SUMMARY
1. The first shearing of regular (non-Hekdesh) sheep must be given to a Kohen (this is known as "Reishis ha’Gez").
2. This is very different than the law regarding giving the foreleg, cheeks, and stomach.
3. There is an argument how many sheep being shorn at once obligates the owner to give the first shearing to a Kohen.
4. If someone purchases the wool of a gentile’s sheep, he does not have to give the first shearing to a Kohen.
5. There is an argument whether partners who jointly own sheep have to give the first shearing to a Kohen.

A BIT MORE
1. This law applies outside of Eretz Yisrael as well, whether or not there is a Beis ha’Mikdash.
2. The law regarding giving the foreleg etc, applies to all kosher domesticated animals, and even to a single animal. However, the shearing of sheep (as opposed to cows and cattle) is only given if multiple sheep are being shorn.
3. Beis Shamai: Shearing two sheep obligates the owner to give the first shearing to the Kohen. Beis Hillel: One must shear five sheep in order to have this obligation.
4. This is because the verse states that one must give this from, "your sheep." If it is not your sheep, even if it is your wool, it does not have to be given to the Kohen.
5. Tana Kama: They do. Rebbi Ilai: They do not, as it says, "your (singular) sheep."
