(1) Because "It is not possible to make Reshus ha'Rabim level with a plane" (Gemara 97a).

(2) Unless it is a utensil, in which case it not classified as a Karmelis but rather it has the full status of a Reshus ha'Rabim (TOSFOS 5a, DH Kan; RASHI 8a, DH Pachos m'Kan).

(3) A person or an animal are not considered to be poles, and their bodies have the full status of Reshus ha'Rabim.

(4) RASHI (8a, DH Mikatfei) writes that it is considered a Reshus ha'Rabim, as does the Rambam (Hil. Shabbos 14:8) and TUR (OC 345). However, later in Shabbos (91b, DH v'Iy Neima) Rashi writes that is a Mekom Petur unless it is 4x4 Tefachim, as writes the Ra'avad (cited by the Rashba on Daf 8a)

(5) According to Rebbi Yosi Bar Yehudah (5a), as long as it is 4 Tefachim wide on top, even if closer to the ground it is much narrower it is classified as a Reshus ha'Yachid. The Halachah does not follow his opinion.

(6) Because the public uses it by resting their loads upon it.

(7) The Gemara (8a) discusses if this status also applies to a *pit* which is 9 Tefachim deep, and concludes that it does not. According to the RAMBAM (Hil. Shabbos 14:8) this category includes only a pole that is *exactly* 9 Tefachim high, whereas according to the ROSH (1:15) and TUR (OC 345), it applies to a pole which is from 9-10 Tefachim in height.
