Question: But the cited Beraisa (which forbids cutting the ropes on Shabbos) argues with the second part of Shmuel's teaching!?

Answer: That Beraisa is the view of R. Nechemyah, who forbids moving Kelim for any other than their intended use (and knives are made to cut food, not ropes).

Question: Then why did that Beraisa speak only of Shabbos (when the Isur would apply to Yom Tov as well)!?

Answer: R. Nechemyah differentiates between Muktzah of Shabbos versus Yom Tov.

Question: It is not logical to differentiate between Shabbos and Yom Tov, and (in the course of resolving three Beraisos) we see that R. Nechemyah forbids burning Kelim (and this must be speaking of Yom Tov)!?

Answer: There is a Machlokes Tanaim as to whether or not R. Nechemyah extended his Isur to Yom Tov.

One may not punch a cavity into a raw piece of potter's clay (to fill it with oil and use it as a lamp).

One may not make coal (a Kli used by smiths).

One may not cut a wick in two.

(R. Yehudah): One may cut the wick by burning it.

Question: Who holds that such an act renders the clay a Kli!?

Answer (R. Yosef): It is R. Meir who (argues with R. Yehoshua and) holds a Kli Cheres is subject to Tum'ah even without being fired in a kiln.

Question (Abaye): Perhaps R. Meir only considers an earthenware vessel complete when it can be used for something!?

Answer: Our Kli is already fit for small coins.

(Alternate rendition of above) Answer (R. Yosef): It is R. Eliezer b'Rebbi Tzadok who holds that (in the Mishnah in Eduyos) that the Kelim remain Tahor even if a Zav moves them because they have not yet been completed.

Question (Abaye): Perhaps R. Eliezer b'Rebbi Tzadok only considers it a Kli when it can be used for something!?

Answer: It is fit for small coins.

(Tana Kama): One may not make Alfasin Charaniyos on Yom Tov.

Answer: We might have erroneously permitted them for bathing on Yom Tov.

Answer: We might have permitted their use for a Turkish bath (prior to the Gezeirah to consider it bathing).

Question: Why is slicing the wick more stringent (R. Yehudah) than burning it in two (both are Tikun Maneh)?

Answer (R. Chiya): By lighting it between two candles it is not clear that he is doing so to split it (he may be kindling the two lights simultaneously).

Question: What is Mochetin?

Answer (citing Rav): Removing the charcoal from the top of the wick.

(Bar Kapara): There are a total of six Halachos regarding wicks (as listed, three l'Chumra and three l'Kula).

The wealthy Babylonians are doomed (owing to their un- Jewish conduct in the cited incident).

The world is dark for one who relies on others for one's food (R. Chisda adds that his life is not worth living).

In the cited incidents, R. Chiya and Rava indicated (to their wife and attendant, respectively) to do so.

Question (Ravina to R. Ashi): How are we to understand the report that your servants cement your oven shut (given the prohibition of mixing the cement)!?

Answer (R. Ashi): We use clay from the banks of the Euphrates, which does not require mixing (and then only when properly designated before Yom Tov).

(Ravina): One may use ashes (mixed with water) because they do not mix properly.

(R. Nachman): Stones may be brought together to form a toilet.

Question (Rabah): But our Mishnah prohibits this!?

Answer (R. Nachman): The case in the Mishnah creates an Ohel (the pot).

Question (Rabah Zuta): But such a structure should also be forbidden on Shabbos!?

Answer (R. Ashi): The structure you are speaking of is permanent, while this toilet is temporary, and would be prohibited mid'Rabanan but for the reason of Kavod ha'Beriyos.

A large fire (the wood was arranged in four walls and a roof) is permitted on Yom-Tov provided one starts from the top (arranging the sticks on top first).

The same holds for Bei'asa, Kedeira, Purya and Chavita._
