(a)

(Mishnah): One may not put a fig cake or dried figs of Terumah into fish sauce, since it damages them, but one may put Terumah wine into fish sauce.

One may not add fragrance to Terumah oil (with Chulin spices) but one may make Terumah wine into Yanumelin (wine mixed with honey, spices and water).

One may not boil Terumah wine because it lessens it.

(Gemara) (Baraisa): (The Mishnah taught that) one may not put a fig cake or dried figs of Terumah into fish sauce etc. One may put a fig cake or dried figs (of Terumah) into fish sauce in the same way that spices are put in, as long as he does not squeeze them of their juices (as he will then discard the pulp). However, it's permitted to squeeze spices (of Terumah) as this is their regular way.

If a chain of Terumah spices was boiled in a pot and then in another pot, if they had already lost their flavor (in the first pot), the second pot is permitted; if not, it's prohibited.

Question: Why is it different from Sheves (dill)? The Mishnah taught (in Maseches Uktzin) that Sheves that already gave flavor to a pot can no longer cause the prohibition of Terumah in a second pot and cannot contract the Tumah of food (as it's no longer considered food)...?

Answer: The Rabbis gave a stringency that Sheves is considered food (as it is merely wood) and they said that it has lost this status once it has given its flavor into a pot.

(R. Chiya citing R. Yochanan): (When the Mishnah taught that one may put Terumah wine into fish sauce) it was following the view of Rebbi, as the Baraisa taught...

Rebbi permits adding (Terumah) wine to fish sauce, (since it's there to give flavor). R. Elazar b'R. Shimon prohibits it, (since it's there merely to counteract the bad fish smell). Therefore, if it was added, Rebbi prohibits it to non-Kohanim and R. Elazar b'R. Shimon permits it.

Question (R. Mana b'R. Tanchum): According to R. Elazar b'R. Shimon, why is fish sauce of gentiles prohibited (because of the wine that's in it)?

Answer (R. Yirmiyah citing R. Chiya bar Vava): Because it was cooked by a gentile.

Question (R. Yosi)(Tosefta): If the gentile seller of the fish sauce was a professional (and he said that it doesn't contain wine), it is permitted to buy it from him (as he wouldn't want to ruin his reputation). If he wasn't a professional, it is prohibited.

Conclusion of question: When they permitted it if he was a professional, isn't it referring to when the sauce wasn't cooked (and we are not concerned since a professional does not add wine)? Similarly, when they prohibited it if he wasn't a professional, it was even if it wasn't cooked (since a non-professional does add wine). And R. Yochanan bar Mari said that even according to those who permit it when it was a professional, that's specifically when he knows himself that the gentile was a professional. (So according to R. Elazar b'R. Shimon, fish sauce containing Terumah wine is permitted to non-Kohanim; so too fish sauce containing wine of gentiles should be permitted...?)

Answer: This shows that the prohibition to benefit from Terumah is only through eating, but the prohibition of idolatry is to gain any type of benefit.

R. Elazar and R. Yochanan disagreed (over the meaning of the Mishnah's ruling that one may not boil Terumah wine because it lessens it). One said that it reduces its quantity and one said that less people will want to drink it. However, it was unknown who said each the statements.

Proof: From R. Yochanan's statement that the opinion of R. Yehuda seems to have switched and from R. Elazar's response that it did not switch, it shows that R. Elazar understood that the reason is that less people will want to drink it. (In our Mishnah, R. Yehuda permitted boiling Terumah wine. An earlier Mishnah (in Perek 2 Mishnah 3; see Chulin 70(a)) taught that one may not separate from cooked wine for uncooked wine (since uncooked wine is superior quality). R. Elazar answered that there, it's discussing the Kohen; here it's discussing the owner (before he gives it to the Kohen).
