(Mishnah): Fruits that had their Terumah separated before they were completed - R. Eliezer prohibits snacking on them (since giving Terumah obligates them to be tithed) and the Chachamim permit it, aside from a basket of figs.

If a person says to his friend, "Take this Issar (coin) and give me five figs for it''; R. Meir says that he should not eat until he tithes. R. Yehuda says that if he was given them one by one, he may eat them and he is exempt; but if he was given several, he is obligated.

(Gemara): What's the case (of the dispute between R. Eliezer and Chachamim)? If he is separating for a basket of figs, all agree that it becomes obligated in Maaser. If he is separating from olives for oil and grapes for wine, all agree that it remains permitted...

Rather, it's when he has dates that he plans on pressing and dried figs that he plans on compressing in a barrel to make fig rings. R. Eliezer says that separating Terumah obligates makes fruits that are not completed. Rabbanan say that it does not do so.

According to the Rabbanan, does separation of Maaser Rishon before the produce was completed prohibit snacking (as it has now become Tevel)?

If he separated the Maaser Rishon whilst it was still sheaves (for which there is no prohibition to separate it before Terumah); all agree that it is permitted...

Rather, the question is about dates that he intends to press and dried figs that he intends to compress (in a barrel to produce fig rings), and he separated from them Terumah Gedolah and then decided not to process them further -

If you say that retroactively, when he finished picking the figs, they were completed; the separation of Terumah after that (which was before the Maaser was taken) prohibited snacking.

(Conclusion of question): But if you say that it becomes completed only from the time of his decision and it didn't become prohibited by separating Terumah (as it wasn't yet completed), does separating Maaser Rishon therefore prohibit it? (The Gemara leaves this question unanswered.)

Answer (R. Yosi citing R. Hila): He may snack on them since this opinion holds that acquisition does not obligate if they are not complete. But he must separate them as Demai since the Am HaAretz knows that bringing them into one's home obligates when they will be completed and he separated Terumah early (before they were completed).

(R. Elazar): (In the Mishnah, the Chachamim permitted snacking on fruits that had their Terumah separated before they were completed, aside from a basket of figs.) These were in fact referring to a basket of any fruit.

Shimon's source is a Kal VeChomer - If at a time when it is obligated in 3 tithes (Terumah Gedolah, Maaser Rishon and Maaser Sheni) you say that it is permitted to snack on; at a time when it is only obligated in 2 tithes (Maaser Rishon and Maaser Sheni), certainly it should be permitted to snack on!
