DAF DISCUSSIONS - PESACHIM 60

H David Levine asks:

I understand from R. Yossi's halacha how an animal offered as two different offerings must be pastured until it becomes unfit for offering, then sold and the proceeds divided between two offerings each of the different types. Is there no additional assessment toward the purchase of new offerings, to offset the value that the animal depreciated while it waited on blemish?

H David Levine, Roanoke, VA USA

The Kollel replies:

David, it is great to hear from you again after a long time!

It is very possible that the animal did not depreciate while waiting for the blemish. On the contrary it might have fattened up, whilst grazing in the pastures. Even though it is now invalid as a sacrifice since it received a blemish, its value for private consumption may have increased.
