CAN THE OMER COME FROM OLD GRAIN? (Yerushalmi Chalah Perek 1 Halachah 1 Daf 4b)

(a)

(Mishnah): If not (they took root after the Omer), they are forbidden until the coming Omer.

(b)

Question (R. Lazar): May one bring the Omer from them (what took root after the Omer, next year)?

(c)

Answer #1: Can you say so that the [next] Omer permits them, and you say so (that they cannot be brought for the next Omer)?

1.

Objection: Other species (the four grains other than barley), they depend on the Omer [to permit them], and the Omer does not come from them! (We explained this like SHA'AREI TORAS ERETZ YISRAEL.)

2.

Answer: No. If you will say about other species that are not Kosher for the Omer, will you say so about barley, which is Kosher for Minchas ha'Omer?!

(d)

Answer #2 (Talmidim citing R. Lazar): "Reishis Ketzircha'', and not the end of your harvest.

(e)

Answer #3 (R. Ze'ira citing R. Elazar): "Bikurim'' - these are not Bikurim.

(f)

Question: What is the difference between [the latter two answers? Both say that one may not bring them.]

(g)

Answer: If he transgressed and brought [from last year's grain] - according to Talmidim, it is Pasul. According to R. Zeira, it is Kosher (Bikurim is only l'Chatchilah).

(h)

The following Chachamim [distinguish];

1.

(R. Yosi bei R. Bun citing R. Chiya citing Ravin bar Chiyah): This is if the grew a third before Rosh Hashanah, but if they reached a third after Rosh Hashanah (they are considered Chadash, and) the Omer may come from them.
