12TH CYCLE DEDICATIONS:

ERUVIN 91 - Dedicated by Mr. and Mrs. D. Kornfeld in honor of Dr. Zecharya Dorshav, wishing him Mazal and Berachah upon reaching the age of Gevuros. May he continue 'from strength to strength' until 120!

[91a - 40 lines; 91b - 32 lines]

TANYA KAVASEI D'RAV- we learned a Beraisa which appears to support Rav (who argues with Shmuel and says that Gud Asik [see Background to 89:13] does not apply when the Mechitzos are not recognizable on the roof)

TANYA KAVASEI D'RAV YEHUDAH- this Beraisa supports Rav Yehudah's explanation of the opinion of Rebbi Shimon

3)[line 13]בתקועTEKO'A- a place located near Beis Lechem

4)[line 14]ואלונטיתALONTIS- a towel

V'HU SHE'LO IRVU- in a case in which the residents of each Chatzer have not made an Eruv amongst themselves

6)[line 24]מי לחשךMI LACHSHACH- who whispered to you? Rashi is not Gores these words. Explanations vary amongst those who are Gores them:

1.Who told you (Shmuel) this (correct) Chidush; namely, that the Halachah follows Rebbi Shimon's ruling whether or not an Eruv was made? (The reason for this rhetorical question is that the reasoning of Rav appears to be quite plausible; RABEINU TAM according to the Maharsha and Maharshal);

2.Who told you (Rav) this (incorrect) Chidush that the Halachah follows Rebbi Shimon's ruling only in the case when an Eruv was not made? The Halachah follows Rebbi Shimon's ruling whether an Eruv was made or not! (RABEINU SHMUEL);

3.Some are Gores REBBI YOCHANAN MI'LACHSHACH - Rebbi Yochanan [who was born] from a whisper. He is called this because of the following story: When he was in utero his mother felt a need to eat on Yom Kippur. Rebbi suggested whispering in her ear that it was Yom Kippur (to communicate this fact to the fetus). When this was done, her pangs of hunger subsided. Rebbi then applied the following verse: "Before I formed you in the belly I knew you, and before you came out of the womb I sanctified you" (Yirmeyahu 1:5) (Yoma 82b) (TOSFOS).

U'PESUCHOS LI'RESHUS HA'RABIM- and the two outer Chatzeros are open to a Reshus ha'Rabim

8)[last line]בכומתא וסודראKUMSA V'SUDRA- a hat and a scarf (which were worn out of the house and removed in the Chatzer)

91b----------------------------------------91b

9)[line 1]מרפסתMIRPESES- a common balcony from which the residents of a second story go down by way of a ladder to the courtyard, and from there to a Reshus ha'Rabim

10)[line 9]רבנן היאRABANAN HI- it is the Rabanan, who maintain that Chatzeros and Gagos are one Reshus, and decree in a case of three Chatzeros that neither of the outer Chatzeros may carry into the middle one for fear that an object which began Shabbos in one outer Chatzer will end up in the other (see Gemara 49a).

MAI LO IRVU, LO IRVU CHATZEROS B'HADEI HADADI- according to this answer, when Rebbi Shimon stipulated "Kol Zman she'Heim Shel Rabim," it was in order to stress that even though there is more of a reason to fear that someone will carry objects which began Shabbos in a house into the Mavoy (since there are so many people), the Rabanan still make no decree.

V'HA LO IRVU KA'TANI- but it was taught "Lo Irvu," which implies that no Eruv was made whatsoever

MAI LO IRVU LO NISHTATFU- what does "Lo Irvu" mean? It means "Lo Nishtatfu." The only Eruv under discussion is the Shituf Mevo'os (which was not made whatsoever. Whether or not an Eruv Chatzeros was made - either within each Chatzer or between them - makes no difference).

EIMA UL'MAVOY ASUR- read, "and to the Mavoy [as well] it is forbidden [to carry from any Chatzer]"
