Opinion #1(Rav Chuna): Beis Shammai refer to the entire vertical face of the barrels and the entire horizontal face, which produces a shape like a Gam (a Greek letter shaped like a final Chaf).

Opinion #2(Bar Kafra): They refer to two Gams (two vertical and two horizontal faces).

If the wines were arranged in the middle of the house (and therefore accessible from all sides)-

According to Rav Chuna one must check a row on every side and the horizontal row on top.

According to Bar Kafra one must check two rows on every side and two horizontal rows on top.

If the wines were arranged in the shape of steps, each step should be checked in the shape of Gams.

Opinion #3 (Rebbi Yaakov bar Acha and Shimon bar Ba): The outer row [referred to by Beis Shammai] is the upper one that is opposite the entrance and the ceiling and one row behind it.

(Another Beraisa reads...): "[and one row] below it''.

Explanation: The Beraisa that states "behind it'' would certainly require checking below it (as the Chametz could fall down). The Beraisa that states "below it'' would not require checking behind it (as Chametz would not fall sideways).

Question: If half a row was used, it is obvious that both behind it and below it should be checked. Concerning the other half that was not used, must the row behind it and below it also be checked (just as that half of the row must be checked itself)? (This question remains unanswered.)

Clarification: This only applies when the barrels have spaces between them; but if they are tightly packed together, one must merely pass the candle over the area.

Suggestion: This case surely proves that we are concerned for Chametz falling?

Rejection (Rebbi Pinchas of Yaffo): I could say that at the time that the barrels were brought, Chametz was brought.
