FOOTNOTES:

==========

(1) From Har ha'Mishchah, the Kohen could see this small rectangular area in the upper right corner of the Heichal's entranceway. The area had a width of 2 Amos through which he could see, because the upper 3 Amos of the Mizbe'ach were recessed inwards 2 Amos (one Amah due to the Yesod on the bottom, and another Amah due to the Sovev, a little more than midway up the Mizbe'ach). At its base, however, the Mizbe'ach extended across the entire area in front of the Heichal's entranceway.

From where the Kohen was standing on Har ha'Mishchah, the Kohen could only see through the Eastern Gate of Har ha'Bayis an area with a height of 0.5 Amos of the Heichal's entranceway. This is because the height of the opening of the Eastern Gate of Har ha'Bayis was 20 Amos, and 19.5 of those Amos were covered up by the ascents which between the Eastern Gate and the Heichal. Thus, the Kohen could only see the uppermost half Amah of the Heichal's entranceway.

(2) None of the entranceway to the Heichal was visible, because even though the Mizbe'ach was not blocking the entranceway to the Heichal, Rebbi Eliezer ben Yakov maintains that there was an additional rise of one Amah (see second paragraph of previous footnote), which completely blocked the view of the Heichal's entranceway from the Eastern Gate.
