YOMA 29 (28 Iyar) -ֲ Dedicated in honor of the birthday of Neti Linzer.

1)

VERIFYING THAT THE TIME CAME (Yerushalmi Perek 3 Halachah 2 Daf 14a)

(a)

(Mishnah): Why did they need this? Once, light from the moon rose, and it appeared as if the eastern sky lit up, and they slaughtered the Tamid, and took it to Beis ha'Sereifah (for it was Pasul).

(b)

They brought the Kohen down to the place of Tevilah. This was the general rule in the Mikdash - anyone who defecates must immerse. Anyone who urinates must be Mekadesh his hands and feet.

(c)

(Gemara) Question #1: Light from the moon goes straight up. Light of the sun spreads across the entire eastern sky! (How could one confuse them?)

(d)

Question #2: This is reasonable at the end of the month (the moon rises at the end of the night). Is there such a concern at the beginning?! (Our Mishnah connotes that they always asked, even at the beginning of the month.)

(e)

(R. Chaninah): From Ayeles ha'Shachar (the morning star, i.e. Venus) until the eastern sky lights up, a person can walk four Mil. From when the eastern sky lights up until sunrise, a person can walk four Mil.

(f)

Source: What is the source that from when the eastern sky lights up until sunrise, a person can walk four Mil? It says "u'Chemo ha'Shachar Alah va'Ya'itzu ha'Mal'achim b'Lot Leimor'' (and when the sun came on the land, Lot came to Tzo'ar - verse 23). From Sedom until Tzo'ar is four Mil.

(g)

Question: It is more than this!

(h)

Answer (R. Ze'ira): The angel bored through [mountains to make] the path [straight, so it was only four Mil. We cannot go straight, so it is more than four Mil for us.]

(i)

Question: What is the source that from Ayeles ha'Shachar until the eastern sky lights up, a person can walk four Mil?

(j)

Answer: [It does not say] Kemo, [rather,] "u'Chemo'' to teach that one matter (from Ayeles ha'Shachar until the eastern sky lights up) is like its colleague (from when the eastern sky lights up until sunrise).

(k)

(R. Yosi bei R. Bun): This Ayeles ha'Shachar - the one who says that it is a star, he errs, for sometimes it is early, and sometimes it is late. (Stars have a fixed time.)

1.

What is Ayeles ha'Shachar? It is like two rays of light that rise from the east and illuminate [like the sun].

(l)

A case occurred in which the great R. Chiya and R. Shimon ben Chalifta were walking in the field of Arbel at the end of the night. They saw Ayeles ha'Shachar, that its light broke through;

1.

R. Chiya Rabah (to R. Shimon ben Chalifta): Great one! So is the redemption of Yisrael - at first it is bit by bit, and it goes and illuminates more and more. (There are five stages - Ayeles ha'Shachar, dawn, the eastern sky lights up, sunrise, and noon.)

i.

What is the reason? "Ki Eshev ba'Choshech Hash-m Ohr Li'' (if one is in the dark, it is painful if it becomes light suddenly);

(m)

[We find these five stages in the redemption of Purim ] - "u'Mordechai Yoshev b'Sha'ar ha'Melech'', and afterwards "va'Yashav Mordechai El Sha'ar ha'Melech'', and afterwards "va'Yikach Haman Es ha'Levush v'Es ha'Sus...'', and afterwards "u'Mordechai Yatza mi'Lifnei ha'Melech bi'Levush Malchus'', and afterwards "la'Yehudim Haysah Orah v'Simchah.''

2)

A BREAK IN THE AVODAH

(a)

(Beraisa): If a Kohen left to talk with his friend - if [he intended] to delay, he must immerse [before resuming Avodah]. If it was for a short time, he must be Mekadesh his hands and feet.

(b)

Question: Isn't defecating a short time? (Why must he immerse afterwards?)

(c)

Answer: Defecating is different. [Since he must divert his mind from Kodesh matters,] they made it like one who delayed.

(d)

(Beraisa): One who slept, he must immerse. (This refers to in the Mikdash. If he left, in any case he must immerse, since he delayed.) One who dozed, he must be Mekadesh his hands and feet.

(e)

Question: Does one who slept need to immerse? R. Chiyah did not teach like this! Sitting in the Azarah was permitted only to kings of Beis David, and R. Ami taught in the name of Reish Lakish that even kings of Beis David there was no sitting [and all the more so lying] in the Azarah!

(f)

Answer: He supported himself on a wall and slept [without sitting or lying].

(g)

Question (against R. Ami): "Va'Yavo ha'Melech David va'Yeshev Lifnei Hashem''!

(h)

Answer (R. Aivi bar Nagri): He was Meyashev (settled himself) in prayer.
