GIVING PEAH WHILST HARVESTING (Yerushalmi Peah Halachah 3 Daf 5b)
îùðä ðåúðéï ôéàä îúçìú äùãä åîàîöòä
(Mishnah): One may give Peah from the beginning of the field (i.e. at the beginning of the harvest) and from the middle (of its harvesting).
øù''à åáìáã ùéúï áñåó ëùéòåø
(R. Shimon): As long as he gives the required amount at the end (so that the total left for the poor is at least 1/60th).

(R. Yehuda): If he left even one stalk at the end as Peah, he can rely on it to also consider what he gave earlier as Peah; but if he did not leave anything at all at the end, what he gave earlier is not Peah.

(Gemara) Explanation #1 (R. Yosi citing R. Shimon ben Lakish): The pasuk states (Vayikra 19:9), "When you reap (the harvest of your land, you shall not fully reap to the corner of your field, nor shall you gather the gleanings of your harvest.)'' What do the words 'you shall not (fully) reap' then come to teach? Even when there is still more to reap, what he already gave as Peah is valid. (Note: The question was based on the literal reading of the pasuk - 'When you reap...to reap'.)

Explanation #2 (R. Yona citing R. Shimon ben Lakish): It teaches that even if he left Peah at the beginning or middle of the harvest, it is valid Peah.

Explanation #3 (R. Yosi citing R. Yehoshua ben Levi): It teaches that even if he harvests for the Temple (such as for the Omer offering), the field is still obligated in Peah.

Question (R. Yudan): Since the Kedushah of Hekdesh only rests on the crops after they have been harvested; if so, at the time of harvest, they were not yet Hekdesh, so they were obviously obligated in Peah?
àîø ø' çðéðà ùìà úàîø éòùä ÷öéø (ä÷ãù)[äãéåè] ë÷öéø (äãéåè)[ä÷ãù]
Answer (R. Chanina): Otherwise you would think that since you are harvesting it to be used for the Temple, it would be considered like Hekdesh and exempt from Peah.

Question: (According to R. Shimon) is the first stalk considered Peah?
îï îä ãúðé äøé æå ôéàä åöøéê ìéúï áñåó ëùéòåø äãà àîøä ÷ãùä îùåí ôéàä
Answer: From the words of R. Shimon in a Tosefta, 'If he gave, whether at the beginning, the middle or the end, it is Peah, but he must give the required amount at the end', it is clear that even the first stalk is Peah.

Question: What is the amount that R. Shimon required to be given at the end? Is it the amount for the entire field or does he deduct that which has already been given?

Answer: If what was first given was valid Peah, certainly he must now only give that which still remains and deducts that which was already given.

(R. Yehuda taught in the Mishnah that if he left even one stalk at the end as Peah, he can rely on it to also consider what he gave earlier as Peah. To be able to add to that stalk at the end, must he have given standing stalks or could they even be detached stalks?) R. Chiya citing R. Yochanan -only attached; R. Yasa citing R. Yochanan - even detached.

Question: When R. Yasa said even detached, is it only when he did not give the full 1/60th earlier that he can now add even detached, or even if he did already give 1/60th?
[ãó éá òîåã à (òåæ åäãø)] ðùîòéðà îï äãà ãàîø ø' éñà áùí øáé éåçðï ìòåìí äåà îåñéó åäåìê îä àðï ÷ééîéï àí áîúëååéï ìôèåø àú ùãäå ëáø ðôèøä àìà ëé àðï ÷ééîéï áùàéðå îúëååéï ìôèåø àú ùãäå:
Answer: From the wording of R. Yasa that he said from R. Yochanan that 'he may always continue to add' - this implies even detached. If he is intending to exempt his field, it is already exempt; rather, the case is when he does not intend to exempt his field and he may add even detached stalks.
