REISH LAKISH'S SOURCE (Yerushalmi Perek 1 Halachah 1 Daf 2a)

(a)

Opinion #1: Reish Lakish challenged R. Yochanan. He learns [separation] like the following;

1.

(Beraisa - R. Yishmael): "B'Zos Yavo Aharon El ha'Kodesh'' [on Yom Kipur] - like it is said in the Parshah [of Milu'im].

2.

What is said in the Parshah? We separate him all seven days, and he serves all seven days, and we train him all seven days. Also this (Avodas Kohen Gadol on Yom Kipur), we separate him all seven days, and he serves all seven days, and we train him all seven days.

3.

Is it said in the Parshah [of Avodas Yom Kipur]?! Rather, since the death of Aharon's sons is said in the Parshah, and they died in the Milu'im, it is as if [the Milu'im] was written in the Parshah.

4.

Question: In the end, [also] Reish Lakish learns from this verse (the Milu'im. Why did he challenge R. Yochanan)?

5.

Answer: Rather, he is like one who heard a matter and challenged it [to see whether others hold like it].

(b)

Opinion #2 (R. Yosi bei R. Bun): Reish Lakish learns [separation] from "va'Yishkon Kevod Hash-m Al Har Sinai'' - just like Moshe did not enter inside [to the place of Shechinah] until he was sanctified in the cloud for seven days, also Aharon enters inside [Kodesh ha'Kodoshim] only after he was sanctified (separated) for seven days.

THE DEATH OF TZADIKIM

(a)

Question: According to R. Yochanan, why is the death of Aharon's sons said in the Parshah [of Avodas Yom Kipur]? They died in the Milu'im!

(b)

Answer (R. Chiya bar Ba): Bnei Aharon died on Nisan 1. Why is their death mentioned regarding [Avodas] Yom Kipur? This teaches that just like Yom Kipur atones for Yisrael, so death of Tzadikim atones for Yisrael.

(c)

(R. Ba bar Bimah): Why is the death of Miryam mentioned next to Parshas Parah? This teaches that just like the ashes of Parah atone for Yisrael, so the death of Tzadikim atones for Yisrael.

(d)

(R. Yudan R. Ba bar Bimah): Why is the death of Aharon mentioned next to breaking of the Luchos? This teaches that the death of Tzadikim is "painful'' to Hash-m like the breaking of the Luchos;

1.

Question: It says (u'Vnei Yisrael Nas'u mi'Be'eros Bnei Ya'akan Moserah Sham Mes Aharon'' - did Aharon die in Moserah? He died in Hor ha'Har - "va'Ya'al Aharon ha'Kohen El Hor ha'Har Al Pi Hash-m va'Yamas Sham''!

2.

Answer: Rather, once Aharon died, the Clouds of Glory departed, and the Kena'anim wanted to fight with them - "va'Yishma ha'Kena'ani Melech Arad Yoshev ha'Negev Ki Ba Yisrael Derech ha'Asarim va'Yilachem b'Yisrael'';

3.

What is Derech ha'Asarim? Their great Tayar (guide), who used to show them the way, had died, and [Kena'anim] came and fought them.

4.

Yisrael wanted to return to Mitzrayim, and they traveled backwards eight journeys, and Shevet Levi ran after them and killed seven families from [Yisrael; in Vayigash it lists 10 sons of Binyamin, and in Pinchas it lists only five, and also Ehud from Shimon and Etzbon from Gad are missing]. Also [Yisrael] killed from [Levi] four (Shim'i, Amrami, Yitzhari and Uzi'eli).

5.

Implied question: [Three of these are listed afterwards] - "la'Amrami la'Yitzhari la'Chevroni la'Azi'eli''!

6.

Answer: (Yisrael almost totally wiped out three of them.) When did they return [to be numerous]? It was in the days of David - "Yifrach b'Yamav Tzadik v'Rov Shalom Ad Bli Yare'ach.'' (We explained the question and answer like HA'GAON RAV C. KANIEVSKY, SHLITA.)

(e)

[Yisrael] said, what caused us all this bloodshed? They said, it is because we did not do Chesed with (properly eulogize) that Tzadik (Aharon). They sat and fixed themselves and eulogized and bestowed Chesed to the Tzadik. Hash-m considered it as if he died there (in Moserah), was buried there, and they bestowed Chesed to the Tzadik.

1.

Note: Right after Aharon died, it says that Bnei Yisrael cried for 30 days (Bamidbar 20:29)! Pirkei d'R. Eliezer (17) says that the verse is out of place. They cried at Moserah.
