[Our Mishnah forbids] wearing shoes]. A Beraisa taught that all these [people] that it was said that they may not wear shoes, if he goes on the road, he may wear shoes. When he reaches the city, he removes them. The same applies to an Avel or Menudah.

Contradiction: Some teach that one may go out with socks on Yom Kipur, and some teach that one may not go out with socks on Yom Kipur!

Answer (Rav Chisda): The one who says that one may go out, he discusses cloth socks. The one who says that one may not go out, he discusses leather socks.

R. Yitzchak bar Nachman went to R. Yehoshua ben Levi on the night of the great fast (Yom Kipur. R. Yehoshua) went out to him wearing Solisah (a shoe without a heel. R. Yitzchak) asked, what is this? He said, I am an Istnis (very finicky. I wear it only to avoid pain.)

R. Shmuel bar Nachman went to R. Yehoshua ben Levi on the night of the fast. [R. Yehoshua] went out to him wearing Solisah. He asked, what is this? He said, I am an Istnis.

R. Samyei Chamunah went out on the night of the fast wearing Solisah.

One Talmid of R. Mana ruled to one of the relatives of the Nasi's house to wear Solisah. He said to him, what is the source of this [Heter]? He said, it is from R. Yehoshua ben Levi. [R. Mana] said to [the Talmid, you may not learn from him, for] R. Yehoshua ben Levi was an Istnis.
