(a)A "Biryah" literally means an independent, living creature (such as an ant, as in Makos 16b) that is considered significant in itself and needs no minimum Shi'ur to make it significant. (See Insights #2, for a list of the conditions which must be met in order for an object to be classified as a Biryah.)

(b)Usually, a person does not receive Malkus for transgressing the prohibition of eating forbidden foods unless he eats a k'Zayis. A person who eats a prohibited Biryah, however, receives Malkus even though the Biryah is smaller than a k'Zayis.

(c)Although by Torah Law, a Biryah is Batel b'Shishim (becomes nullified if the other food is sixty times greater in volume) when it is mixed with other foods, the Chachamim decreed that a Biryah does not become Batel even if the other food is 1,000 times greater in volume than it.
