Why did He call him Yizre'el?

1.

Targum Yonasan: Call their name Mevadraya. Rashi ? prophesize about [Yisrael] that they will be exiled, and Zeru'in (seeded) in [other] lands.

2.

Radak: [He is a Mashal for] Yaravam ben Yo'ash, who was strong in his kingship, like I explained (3).

3.

Malbim (3): This son was surely from Hoshe'a 1 , so he 2 did not call him a name that shows hatred. The early generations, even though they were Mezanah with Chatas Yaravam, they also served Hashem; they were still attributed to Him. This son represents all the generations from Yehu until the end of Beis Yehu. The wife was Eshes Zenunim, yet the children were still attributed to Hashem. Even though they did not veer from Chatas Yaravam, Avodas ha'Ba'al ceased, and they believed in Hashem. The calves [of Yaravam] were like a Shituf (they served them and Hashem), or a means to draw down spirituality and influence.

1

Below (6), Malbim implies that she was not Mezanah at the beginning of her marriage. Still, why was Hoshe'a sure that Yizre'el was from her? Perhaps he was from Zenus before he married her! Perhaps Yizre'el was born more than nine months after they married. Or, she menstruated after marrying him, which shows that she was not pregnant.

2

Hashem commanded him what name to give! Perhaps Hashem chose names that hint to His connection to Yisrael, and also to Hoshe'a's feelings towards his wife and children. (PF)

2)

Why does it say "Ki Od Me'at"?

1.

Radak: The punishment did not come in the days of Yaravam ? he succeeded in his kingship! The punishment came in the days of his son Zecharyah.

3)

What is "Demei Yizre'el"?

1.

Rashi citing Targum Yonasan: The blood of Beis Achav; Yehu killed them in Yizre'el, because they served the Ba'al, and afterwards Yehu and his sons served idolatry. Therefore, I consider the blood of Beis Achav like innocent blood [that was spilled]. Radak ? even though it was proper in Hashem's eyes to kill Beis Achav, since Yehu did not follow Toras Hashem, and did not veer from all the sins of Yaravam ben Nevat, it is as if he spilled innocent blood. We similarly find that Basha was punished for the blood of Nadav ben Yaravam, even though Nadav was a Rasha ? "v'Al Asher Hikah Oso" (Melachim I, 16:7).

2.

Malbim: It is the vengeance that I took in the field of Yizre'el against Beis Achav for serving idolatry. I will put this punishment also on Beis Yehu, who also served idolatry.

4)

Why does it say "Al Beis Yehu"?

1.

Rashi: Yaravam ben Yo'ash was from Yehu's sons, and his son Zecharyah was killed (Melachim II, 15:8-12). Radak ? Zecharyah reigned only six months, and the kingship of Yehu [and his seed] ceased. Malbim ? it was already a fixed kingship, for it lasted four generations, and it returned the border of Yisrael to its place (Melachim II, Perek 14).

5)

How will Hashem make Malchus Beis Yisrael cease?

1.

Radak: Malchus Beis Yisrael lasted only a short time after this. It ceased in the days of Hoshe'a ben Elah. In the days of Yehu, it says "ba'Yamim ha'Hem Hechel Hashem Lekatzos b'Yisrael" (Melachim II, 10:32).

6)

Here it says that Hashem will punish Beis Yehu for killing Beis Achav. We find that Hashem rewarded Yehu for killing them (Melachim II, 10:30)!

1.

Alshich: He was rewarded for the action, which fulfilled Hashem's will, but punished because it was not l'Shem Shamayim, for also he sinned.

2.

Metzudas David: Initially, Yehu killed them bi'Dvar Hashem, for worshipping the Ba'al. Later, Yehu sinned, and it was considered that he spilled innocent blood.
