Who are "Anshei ha'Tarim"?

1.

Rashi: They are merchants who visit the land for business; they gave to Shlomo.

2.

'Rashi' (Divrei ha'Yamim II, 9:14): People [bringing the gold] were afraid to go from country to country and from kingdom to kingdom without a guide. They paid these guides (and 666 Kikarim remained after paying them).

3.

Radak: They are small merchants. They seek very much [good prices] for buying and selling, for they do a small quantity [and need to make a nice profit]. Therefore they are called Tarim (for they search until finding a good buy). "Anshei" is not a Semichus. Rather, the suffix Yud is merely for the plural. [It should say Anashim;] the Mem at the end is omitted. We find like this - "Anshei Mechukeh Al Kir" (Yechezkel 23:14), "Anshei Vnei Veliya'al" (Shoftim 19:22), "Chalonei Shekufim" (above, 6:4) and similar words.

4.

Radak citing Targum Yonasan: Wages of the professionals.

5.

Malbim: They are big merchants who travel in countries to bring merchandise from country to country.

2)

What is "Mischar ha'Rochelim"?

1.

Radak: They are fragrances of the merchants, like it says "mi'Kol Avkas Rochel" (Shir ha'Shirim 3:6).

2.

Radak citing Targum Yonasan: Merchandise of the merchants.

3.

Malbim: It is merchandise of small merchants. All merchandise that passes through his country, [the owner] gives a fixed tax to the king.

3)

Why does it say here "ha'Rochelim", and in Divrei ha'Yamim II, 9:14 it says "Socharim"?

1.

'Rashi' (Divrei ha'Yamim II, 9:14): Socharim are merchants who brought to Shlomo as a pretext to see his Chachmah.

2.

Radak: Rochelim are fragrance merchants ("mi'Kol Avkas Rochel" - Shir ha'Shirim 3:6). Socharim are big merchants.

4)

Who are "Malchei ha'Erev"?

1.

Targum Yonasan: Malchei Sumchevasa. Rashi - these are kings who were guarantors, that he relied on them.

5)

Here it says "Malchei ha'Erev." In Divrei ha'Yamim II, 9:14 it says "Malchei Arav." Yirmeyah 25:24 implies that these are different, for it says "Malchei Arav v'Es Kol Malchei ha'Erev"!

1.

'Rashi' (Divrei ha'Yamim II, 9:14): Malchei ha'Erev are kings of the Aravim. Refer to 10:15:4:1.

2.

Radak #1: These are close to each other.

3.

Radak #2: Perhaps both of them brought gifts to Shlomo.
