What do we learn from "l'Eglos Beis Aven Yaguru"?

1.

Rashi: The punishment that will come on the calves in Beis Kel; in Sefer Yehoshua (7:2) it is called Beis Aven [Radak - for detriment. It does not mention Dan (the other calf was there), for the primary Avodah was in Beis Aven. It is as if both of them were there. Yaravam made the calves. They are mentioned in masculine and feminine 1 , for they were mere forms. Their Avodah will cease when they are broken.

2.

Malbim: The reason for the rebellion was the calf in Beis Aven.

1

"Eglos" is feminine. The rest of the verse uses the masculine - Alav, Kemarav, Kevodo, Mimenu. Radak means that if it were a live calf, the verse would use only the masculine. (PF)

2)

Why does it say "Yaguru Shechan Shomron"?

1.

Rashi: Their neighbors in Shomron will fear (refer to 10:5:3:1).

2.

Rashi (Sanhedrin 63b): The neighbors of Shomron will fear.

3.

Radak: It mentions Shomron, even though the calves were not there, for it was the capitol of Malchus Yisrael, and they supported Avodas ha'Agalim. When Beis Kel will be destroyed, and the calves did not save them, those who dwell in Shomron will fear for themselves, for all of Eretz Yisrael was captured before Shomron; Melech Ashur besieged it for three years.

4.

Malbim: Yaguru is an expression of gathering. They will gather to rebel against the king that abolished serving the calf.

3)

Who will mourn over what?

1.

Rashi: The calf's nation (Efrayim) and priests mourn over it. They always rejoiced over it; now they will mourn over its honor, for it was exiled.

2.

Radak: The nation that served the calf in Beis Kel, they will mourn over it. The priests will mourn over it. They always rejoiced over it; now they will mourn over the loss of its honor - they will see it broken.

4)

What do the priests rejoice over?

1.

Sanhedrin 63b, according to Rashi there: They used to carry it. Now that it was exiled, they are relieved from their load. We read Kevodo like Kevedo (its excrement).

2.

Rashi: Before, they always rejoiced over [the calf]. Radak - these are the priests that offered to it.

5)

Why did the calf's honor depart?

1.

Rashi: It was exiled.

2.

Radak: It was broken.

3.

Malbim: Hoshe'a ben Elah permitted people to ascend for the Regel and serve Hashem.
