Whose sons fought?
Rashi: The sons of Melech ha'Tzafon.
What do we learn from "u'Va Vo v'Shataf"?
Rashi: Melech ha'Tzafon's son came and inundated, [and passed to Eretz ha'Negev].
Ibn Ezra: The multitude of Melech ha'Tzafon came on boats to Melech ha'Negev.
Malbim: Only one son came (Antiyochus ha'Gadol; the older son died in the war). Melech ha'Negev (Ptolemy Pilafatur) saw that Antiyochus is stronger than him, so he sent Sheluchim to make Shalom with him.
Why does it say "v'Yashov v'Yisgareh Ad Ma'uzah"?
Rashi: He fought with Melech ha'Negev, until his fortified city. Ibn Ezra - v'Yisgareh is like "v'Al Tisgar Bam Milchamah."
Malbim: After four months, Antiyochus saw that Ptolemy's Shalom was insincere. He was merely stalling to prepare strength for war. Therefore, he returned, and conquered until the fortress on the border of Egypt.
