Rashi: Wherever we stood in war, it was for the gates of Yerushalayim, in which people engage in Torah.

Radak: This refers to the first to ascend to Yerushalayim. They stood in the gates, and saw those coming after them.
3.
Malbim: Before reaching Beis Hashem, to see the Divine light shining on the 'body' of Yisrael, in the gate we found place for the body to stand complete on its feet.
