Malbim citing Mahari: This shows that the elder was a true Navi.

Malbim: He knew this from Ish ha'Elokim; he explained his words. The elder's bones were saved only in the merit of Ish ha'Elokim (Melachim II, 23:18). He did not have his own merit; he was a false Navi!
