What is "Nivzeh b'Einav Nim'as"?

Rashi: One who is disgraced due to his sins, a Tzadik despises him, like Chizkiyah, who dragged his father's bones in disgrace (Makos 24a). Malbim - this is even if the sinner is his relative 1 .

Rashi (Sanhedrin 47a): He is not concerned for his own honor. Chizkiyah dragged his father's bones in disgrace for Kidush Hashem (to disgrace a Rasha in the eyes of people) without concern for his own honor.

Radak: Even though he is "Holech Tamim u'Fo'el Tzedek v'Dover Emes", he is not haughty about this; he is lowly in his own eyes. He thinks in his heart that he does not do one part in 1000 of what he is obligated for the Creator's honor.

Sha'arei Teshuvah 1:23: He is disgraced in his own eyes, for one who recognizes his Creator knows how lowly is one who transgressed His words 2 .

What is "v'Es Yir'ei Hashem Yechaved."?

Makos 24a: King Yehoshafat illustrates this. When he would see a Chacham, he would rise from his throne, kiss him and say 'Avi Avi Rebbi... '

Radak: He considers all the good that he did, like nothing, compared to what he should do, and the good that others do, he considers it to be great. He thinks that Yir'ei Hashem are higher than himself, and that they fear Hashem more than he does, and he honors them.

Malbim: He honors them even if they are not his relatives. This shows that his heart feels primarily for Hashem's honor, to honor those who fear Him, and disgrace those who transgress His Mitzvos. Not only is he not moved by love of relatives - he not moved by self-love! Refer to 15:4:3:4.

What is "Nishba Lehara v'Lo Yamir"?

Makos 24a: R. Yochanan illustrates this. He would say 'I am fasting until I reach home 1 .'

Rashi: If he swore to harm himself, he does not change it. All the more so he does not change a matter that does not harm him!

Radak: He swears to harm his body via fasting or refraining from pleasures, or to diminish his money and give to Tzedakah or for a Mitzvah, and does not deviate; he fulfills it. Because it is bad for his body, he swore, lest his Yetzer ha'Ra distract him not to fulfill. So said David - "Nishbati va'Akayemah Lishmor Mishpatei Tzidkecha" (Tehilim 119:106).

Malbim: He swears or vows to harm himself via fasting and affliction, and does not deviate from his vow.

Ta'anis 12a: He said so to stop the Nasi from insisting that R. Yochanan eat with him. Rashi (12a) - really, this is not a Ta'anis. (Even so, he fulfilled his word.)
