QUESTIONS ON RASHI

6)

Rashi writes that "v'Ishah El Achosah Lo Sikach" applies to [marrying them] at once. What does this mean?

1.

Mizrachi, (from Kidushin 50b) Sifsei Chachamim: If he betroths them simultaneously, it does not take effect.

2.

Gur Aryeh: Both are married to him. The Pasuk implies that he takes one woman to another; Rashi explains that this is not so.

7)

Rashi writes that "Litzror" implies that they cause each other anguish. Why did the Torah give this reason?

1.

Ramban, Moshav Zekenim: Two sisters should love one another, and not indulge in rivalry. It does not say so about a woman and her daughter; that Isur is due to She'er (kinship), and is forbidden even after his wife dies.

2.

Seforno: Since one is not the child of the other, there would be no reason to forbid marrying one's wife's sister. This is why the prohibition is only applies as long as his wife is alive, unlike other Arayos.
