Since the Torah writes "Ish be'Chet'o Yamasu", why does it also need to write "Lo Yumsu Avos al Banim ... "?

1.

Rashi and Targum Onkelos: "Lo Yumsu Avos al Banim" means that 'fathers cannot die via the testimony of the children' 1 "u'Vanim Lo Yumsu al Avos", that 'children cannot die via the testimony of their fathers. 2

2.

Seforno: To include in the prohibition, a king killing the son of someone who is found guilty of treason. 3

3.

Rashbam: The latter forbids a son to be sentenced to death for the sins of his father 4 (or vice-versa), at the hand of Beis-Din, 5 (and "Ish be'Chet'o Yumasu" it seems, is merely a clarification of the first part of the Pasuk).

4.

Targum Yonasan: 'Fathers cannot be killed either upon the testimony of their sons or on account of their sins ... but each man is sentenced to death for his own sins via two witnesses. 6

1

See Oznayim la'Torah, who supports this explanation from a granmmatical point of view.

2

Bava Kama, 85a: And the Torah writes "al Banim" and not 'al Beneihem' to teach us that Avadim - who do not have Yichus Banim - are Pasul to testify. See Torah Temimah, note 146.

3

Seforno: As was customary in those days, in order to remove any threat to his throne. See Seforno.

4

Rashbam: See Melachim 2, 14:6.

5

Rashbam: However, Hashem punishes sons for the sins of their father, if they follow in the footsteps of their fathers, as the Pasuk states in Yisro Shemos, 20:5 - "Poked Avon Avos al Banim".

6

Refer to 24:16:1:3*.

2)

How will we reconcile the current Pasuk "u'Banim Lo Yumsu al Avos" with the Pasuk in Shemos 20:5 "Pokeid Avos al Banim"?

1.

Refer to Shemos, 20:5:5:1.

3)

What are the implications of the word "Ish be'Chet'o Yamusu"?

1.

Sifri: It implies that grown-up children only die for their own sins, but that small children (sometimes) die for the sins of their fathers. 1
