What is the definition of "Keri"?

1.

Rashi #1 (citing the Sifra), Rashbam and Targum Yonasan: It means haphazardly (irregularly). 1

2.

Rashi #2 (citing Menachem ben S'ruk and Targum Onkelos): It means to refrain 2 from performing the Mitzvos.

3.

R. Bachye: It means to attribute one?s successes to one?s own merits and good deeds 3 and not to Hashem?s Chesed and one?s problems to chance. 4

4.

Targum Onkelos: It means 'If you go with Me tough' (unyielding).

1

Rashi: As in Mishlei, 25:17 & 17:27.

2

Rashi, explaining Targum Onkelos: To harden their hearts to rebel against Hashem.

3

R. Bachye: As the Torah writes in Devarim 9:5 ?Lo be?Tzidkascha u?ve?Yosher Levavcha?.

4

Because then Hashem responds by leaving one to chance, as the Torah writes in Pesukim 23 & 24. See R. Bachye.

2)

How can the Torah state "Sheva ke'Chatoseichem", and then list only six punishments?

1.

Rashi (in Pasuk 22) and R. Bachye (in Pasuk 16): This is because, based on the Pasuk in Devarim, 32:24 "ve'Shen Beheimos Ashalach bam", "Veshiklah eschem" incorporates a. both the teeth of wild beasts and of domesticated animals 1 and b. other forms of poisonous vermin ? as the Torah writes there ?Im Chamas Zochalei Afar?.

1

Rashi: It actually appened in Eretz Yisrael on two occasions, once that a donkey and once a wild ass, bit someone and he died. See also Sifsei Chachamim.
