Why does it say "Im Yoled Zachar"?

1.

Rashi: Do males give birth 1 , and this is why they are seized with birth-pangs (are powerless due to pain and fear)?!

2.

Malbim: A conquered, afflicted Medinah is metaphorically called a pregnant woman amidst birth-pangs. The mother (city) expels her children from her womb, and opens the source of her blood. The male, who caused the pregnancy, via which come the birth-pangs, is not terrified and pained at the time of birth. This is a parable for Yisrael, who caused the birth-pangs to Bavel. They are like the male. They should not be terrified and scream amidst the birth-pangs! Why are Yisrael so afraid of the afflictions that came on Bavel?

1

Radak: The simple form of this verb usually applies only to females, who give birth. A male causes [pregnancy, and via this] birth, but only females give birth! Birth-pangs are harsher than other pains. Therefore, the men's pain from the afflictions that will come are compared to birth-pangs.
