Does a great army not save a king and defeat his enemy?!
Radak: People recognize that Hashem supervises them and understands all their deeds, and benefits or harms whom He wants to. You see sometimes that the greatest king, with a great army, is not saved; a small army defeats him! As long as Hashem wanted, Melech Ashur defeated all nations and conquered all lands. Hashem called him "Shevet Api" and "Zami" (Yeshayah 10:5). When he became haughty and said "b'Cho'ach Yadi Asisi uv'Chachmasi Ki Nevunosi" (ibid., 13), he came against Yerushalayim with a great army, Hashem killed them all (Melachim II, 19:35).
Malbim: From the Hashgachah over all people is drawn a wondrous Hashgachah over Yir'ei Hashem. All efforts and preparations will not help against this Hashgachah.
Where do we find that a Gibor's strength did not save him?
Radak: Sancheriv's sons killed him with a sword 1 , and the Gibor Galyus fell to David, a tender youth.
What is the source that Sancheriv was a Gibor? Perhaps if not, he would have been too ashamed to say "b'Cho'ach Yadi Asisi" (Yeshayah 10:13). (PF)
