What does the Torah mean when it writes "Lishkav Etzlah"?

1.

Rashi and Ramban: It implies that [he refused] even to lie beside her, without being intimate with her. 1

2.

Ha'amek Davar: It means [he avoided even lying] in her room, lest she lie by him, and he cannot evade her.

1

Ramban, Gur Aryeh: Since the Torah does not write 'Lishkav Imah' (as it does in 39:7), or 'Lishkav Osah.'

2)

What does the Torah mean when it adds "Lih'yos Imah"?

1.

Rashi and Targum Yonasan: It means that he refused to be with her, so that he would not be punished together with her in the World to Come. 1

2.

Seforno, Rashbam and Malbim: Yosef was even careful about being secluded with her (Yichud). Ha'amek Davar - He was careful only about seclusion that leads to Aveirah, i.e. at night. He was not careful during the day, for he did not expect her to be so brazen as to entice him during the day.

3.

Ramban (citing the Ibn Ezra): It means that Yosef even refused to chat with her. 2

1

Moshav Zekenim (citing Avodah Zarah 5a): This shows that one who is intimate with a Nochris is tied to her like a dog (which after Bi'ah, remains stuck to the female and cannot separate from her).

2

Gur Aryeh: Why doesn't Rashi interpret this way? If he refused even to speak with her, certainly he would not be in a position to lie next to her! That would make the preceding phrase ("Lishkav Etzlah") unnecessary.

3)

What are the implications of "k'Daberah Eilav Yom Yom"?

1.

Targum Yonasan: She tried to convince him on that day and the following one.

2.

Yoma 35b: Every day she would try to entice him (by threatening him, if he would not consent), She said - 'I will tie you up in jail!' He replied, 'Hashem loosens the bound!' 'I will bend you over!' 'Hashem straightens the bent!' 'I will blind your eyes!' - 'Hashem opens the eyes of the blind!' 1 She then offered him 1,000 Kikar of silver, 2 but he refused that too.

3.

Ha'amek Davar: There is a Pesik (a stroke) between Yom and Yom, to teach that each day she had different enticements.

1

Cf. Tehilim 146:7-8.

2

This is five times what was used for the Mishkan, i.e. 1,500,000 Shekalim! And this was before Egypt amassed the wealth of all the countries coming to buy food! (PF)

4)

1.
