1)

What does he recall?

1.

Rashi: I used to ascend [to the Mikdash] on the Regel. I passed among bands of people, and walked with them until Beis Elokim.

2.

Malbim: I used to be zealous and run to Beis Elokim in spite of difficulties. Now I slacken in Avodas Hashem; I am not Moser Nefesh to come to Beis Elokim and ignore all obstacles on the way (refer to 42:5:3:3).

2)

What is "Sach"?

1.

Rashi #1: It is an amount [of people]. Radak - I was part of the number.

2.

Rashi #2: It is an expression of Sechach and Sukah, i.e. in covered wagons, like Sukos.

3.

Malbim: It is thicket (even if I needed to pass over thorns, I did so).

3)

What is the meaning of "Adadem"?

1.

Rashi: I walk with them. This is like 'one may be Medadeh calves and colts (hold them and make them walk). A woman may be Medadeh her son' (Shabbos 128b). This is in place of two words - Adadeh Imahem (I will walk with them), just like "v'Lo Yachlu Dabro l'Shalom" (Bereishis 37:4) - Daber Imo. Radak - we would go slowly, for there were no problems on the way.

2.

Rashi citing Menachem: It is an expression of Yedidus (fondness), like "Nasati Es Yedidus Nafshi b'Chaf Oyveha" (Yirmeyah 12:7).

3.

Rashi citing Dunash: It is an expression of Demamah (quiet), like "Dom la'Shem v'Hischolel Lo" (37:7). I will be mute and quiet until I come to Beis Elokim with singing. This is like "Eshmerah l'Fi Machsom b'Od Rasha l'Negdi" (39:2), "va'Ani ch'Cheresh Lo Eshma uch'Ilem Lo Yiftach Piv" (38:14). The root is Dom 1 .

4.

Malbim: I stepped [on thorns to get to Beis Elokim].

1

This is unlike Rashi's own Perush, that the Mem is not from the root; refer to 42:5:4:1.

4)

Why does it say "b'Kol Rinah v'Sodah"?

1.

Radak: We thanked Hashem and praised Him on the road, for he leads us safely.

2.

Malbim: Even if I stepped on thorns, I did so amidst song and thanks.

5)

What is "Hamon Chogeg"?

1.

Rashi: They went to celebrate [the festival].

2.

Rashi citing Shocher Tov: In Greek, Chogegin is a pool of water 1 .

3.

Radak #1: They ascended with Korbanos to offer during the Regel.

4.

Radak #2: They danced amidst great Simchah - "Ochlim v'Shosim v'Chogegim" (Shmuel I, 30:16).

5.

Malbim: Multitudes [pass over thorns to come to Beis Elokim].

1

Shocher Tov: Just like there is no Shi'ur to the size of a pool, there is no Shi'ur to Yisrael when they ascend for the Regalim.

QUESTIONS ON RASHI

6)

Rashi writes 'I used to ascend for the Regel.' Most people in exile were not in Eretz Yisrael at the time of the Mikdash!

1.

Radak: Even so, it says "E'evor" (I pass), because their fathers saw that Simchah. Similarly, "va'Yare'u Osanu ha'Mitzrim va'Y'anunu
