Why did Yosef inform his father in advance that he would settle him in the land of Goshen?

1.

Ramban: Because he knew that he would not want to live in Egypt (the capital), close to the royal palace. 1

2.

Malbim: With reference to 45:9:152:1 - 2. it was a second reason why Ya?akov should come to Egypt - since Yosef would be able to provide him with a permanent residence in the land of Goshen. 2 Moreover - 3. it would enable him to live independently - rather than among the Egyptian idolaters - 4. he would be close to Yosef, as opposed to Eretz Cana?an, which was far (though this reasons is not confined to the land of Goshen), and 5. Their sheep and cattle would graze close to their living-quarters - as opposed to Eretz Yisrel, where they grazed far from where they lived. 3

3.

Ha'amek Davar: He was informing his father that he woukd be able to expel its residents, and clear it out for him.

1

Preumably because it was the source of Tum?ah and in order to retain his independence.

2

As the Torah will specificly state in 47:11 "Vayoshev Yosef ... Vayiten lahem Achuzah".

3

Refer to 45:11:1151:1.
