Why does it say "Echad" after the name of the Shevet?

1.

Rashi citing Sifri Ha'azinu 315: This teaches that in the future, [each Shevet in] Yisrael will receive a portion whose length is from east to west, and its width is 25,000 Kanim, i.e. 150,000 Amos (a Kaneh is six Amos), i.e. 75 Mil (a Mil is 2000 Amos). Rashi ? the Sifri learns from the Terumah, which is like one of these portions. "Echad" teaches like one of these portions. A Piyut teaches like this.

QUESTIONS ON RASHI

2)

Rashi writes that the future borders are the same as the Torah says. Here it says that Dan will receive until Damesek!

1.

Malbim: Really, the new borders include more than the old borders.

2.

Ohr Eliyahu (Perek 47, Ha'aros 4, 8): Rashi holds that after Yisrael settles the entire area delineated in the Torah, then the border will expand to fulfill Hashem's promises (to receive Kini, Kenizi and Kadmoni).

3)

Rashi writes that each of the 13 portions will be 75 Mil wide; in all, this is 975 Mil. Eretz Yisrael is 400 Parsa'os from north to south, i.e. 1600 Mil!

1.

Rashi: Perhaps the Mil in the calculation here are big, and there are less than four such Mil in a Parsah. If there are two and a half Mil in a Parsah, this is 1000 Mil; 25 Mil are extra.

2.

Eretz Yisrael is called "Eretz ha'Tzvi" (Daniel 11:16). It is spacious when people dwell on it, and constricted when it is not inhabited (Gitin 57a). Rashi (Bamidbar 13:25) says that Eretz Yisrael is 400 by 400 Parsa'os. Presumably, he learns from two episodes in which Eretz Yisrael shook this amount (Megilah 3a, Bava Kama 82b). Both episodes were during Bayis Sheni. If there will be fewer Yisraelim when the land is divided, this can explain why it will be less than 400. (PF)
