Who are "Dodo u'Mesarfo"?
Rashi citing Targum Yonasan: His relative and friend [will save his bones from the fire].
Radak #1: Dodo is his father's brother. Mesarfo is his mother's brother.
Radak #2: Mesarfo is an expression of burning; the Samech is in place of a Sin.
Radak citing his father: His beloved who comes to burn the flesh of his dead relative due to the smell 1 , and remove bones from the house.
Malbim: Dodo is his uncle. The father, his sons and brothers proper to inherit him, all died in a plague. The only relative to bury the bodies and inherit is his uncle ? "v'Im Ein Lo Achim u'Nesatem Es Nachalaso la'Achei Aviv 2 " (Bamidbar 27:10). He will take him for burial, and also burn him ? "va'Yikchu Es Geviyas Sha'ul? va'Yisrefu Osam Sham" (Shmuel I, 31:12). Radak explained that this is embalming with fragrances that 'burn' and dry the bones. Especially at a time of plague, they put plaster on the bones so they will burn, and the plague will not spread from them. Since he inherits the house, he removes the bones to be Metaher it.
Who is "b'Yarkesei ha'Bayis"?
Rashi: One who went to check [if others remain] in the house.
Malbim (10-11): It is one of the servants. He does not want to enter the house itself, due to the plague, or lest the house collapse. Rather, he is in a small house in back of the big house; it will not be stricken as harshly as the big house (11).
What is the question "ha'Od Imach"?
Rashi: Is there another alive with you from the hidden, who escaped?
Radak: Due to the great plague, he will say 'are there other Mesim with you to take out? I will help you.'
Malbim: Is there someone from the family who escaped the plague, e.g. the son or brother of the house's owner?
What is the answer "Efes"?
Rashi: There is no one else alive, only dead.
Radak: I already took out all the Mesim.
What is the meaning of "Hass"?
Rashi: Cast and remove everything.
Radak: Be quiet, and do not lament. This is because (a) they caused their own demise (refer to 6:10:6:2), or (b) not to break the nation's heart, or (c) lest the enemy hear.
Malbim: Do not bless Hashem now (refer to 6:10:6:3).
What do we learn from "Ki Lo Lehazkir b'Shem Hashem"?
Rashi based on Targum Yonasan: This happened to them because they did not want to mention Hashem's name (pray to Him).
Radak: This happened to them because they did not mention Hashem's name, only the names of the Ba'alim.
Malbim (10-11): The custom was to mention Hashem's name over the dead ? to say Tziduk ha'Din (justifying that Hashem killed him) and to bless Dayan ha'Emes. Really, one must bless also she'Hecheyanu - if they told someone 'your father died', and he inherits him, he blesses Dayan ha'Emes and she'Hecheyanu 1 . The servant tells him not to bless now, for it is dangerous ? the house is about to fall, based on the coming verse. Also, it will fall, and he will not inherit anything 2 ! This is why the servant is in back of the house!
Brachos 59b says that he blesses ha'Tov veha'Metiv, i.e. if he shares the inheritance with others. (PF)
Even if the owner owned only the house, the uncle will inherit the rocks or bricks! And even if they will become useless rubble, he inherits the land that the house occupied! Perhaps one does not feel Simchah over a small inheritance like this. (PF)
