Malbim (1:1): Amos was not prepared for Nevu'ah, and was not established in Yisrael to be a Navi.

Rashi: I decide which sycamore trees should be cut, which should be left to add branches, and which are proper for beams. This is the way of those who cut beams. Boles is like Bolesh ¹ ; Amos' speech was maimed. Pesikta d'Rav Kahana (Nachamu 16) - they called him Pesilusa (they said, Hashem should not have put His Shechinah on this Pesilusa, i.e. his speech is maimed ² ). He was called Amos because he was Amos in his tongue (stuttered).

Radak #1: He collected Shekamim to feed his cattle. This is a kind of fig tree.

Radak #2: He mixed Shekamim with other things for the needs of his cattle. Chazal called something mixed 'Balus'; an Oni eats his bread from a Balusah dough (Shabbos 76b). I.e. the flour, bran and coarse bran are kneaded together. Therefore, they join to the Shi'ur for Chalah.
