Why did they make an ambush to rob travelers?

Malbim: Initially the ambush was "Lo" (to kill Avimelech when he passes), just they strayed from the purpose and robbed travelers. Avimelech found out, and avoided going there. This was Hashgachah, so that before the Atad is burned, it will burn the cedars.
