Was he expelled from being a Kohen?

1.

Radak: He was expelled from being Kohen Gadol. 1 This began "Sefacheni Na El Achas ha'Kehunos" (Shmuel I, 2:36) - they will never have authority in Kehunah. They will be secondary to others over them. Evyasar was from Beis Eli.

2.

Kli Yakar: Yes, now he could not serve idolatry even as a Kohen Hedyot. Refer to 2:26:1:3 and the note there.

1

David already made Tzadok Kohen Gadol in place of him when Evyasar could not answer via the Urim v'Tumim! Perhaps he still had the status of Kohen Gadol, and could serve in place of Tzadok if needed; now, he was absolutely demoted. Refer to 2:26:1:3*. (PF)

What was said about Beis Eli?

1.

Rashi: "Va'Hakimosi Li Kohen Ne'eman", "v'Hibateta Tzar Ma'on?" (Shmuel I, 2:35, 32). From when Shilo was destroyed, there was not an esteemed house of Avodah for Hashem. Now that the Beis ha'Mikdash will be built, Hashem fulfilled His word to expel Beis Eli.
