Rashi (in Erchin, 4b): "Nefesh" incorporates many people and "Adam", all types of people, even females and even children. In this case, it refers to the little girls that they kept alive.

Oznayim la'Torah: To stress that, although Adam is listed last (Refer to 31:32:2:1), they are superior to animals - due to the fact that they possess Da'as.
