10 Days of Teshuvah

תלמוד בבלי יבמות קה.	Yevamos 105a
אלא מִנַּיִן שאפילו נֶחְתָּם, מתקרע? שנאמר מִי כַּ-ה' אֱלֹקֵינוּ בְּכָל קָרְאֵנוּ אֵלָיו (דבר' ד:ז). והכתיב, דִּרְשׁוּ ה' בְּהִמָּצְאוֹ (ישע' נה:ו)? לא קשיא, הא ביחיד הא בציבור. יחיד אימת? אמר רב נחמן אמר רבה בר אבוה, אלו עשרה ימים שבין ראש השנה ליום הכיפורים.	Rather, what is the source that even if a decree has been sealed, it can be torn up? The Pasuk states, "[To what nation is G-d so close,] like Hashem our G-d, whenever we call out to Him!" (Devarim 4:7). Yet it also says, "Seek Hashem when He is to be found" (Yeshayahu 55:6 - which implies that sometimes we cannot find Him)! Rather, an individual cannot always find Him, but a Tzibur can. When can an individual find Him? Rabah bar Avuha, answers: During the 10 days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

הגה: ויש לכל אדם לחפש ולפשפש במעשיו ולשוב מהם בעשרת ימי תשובה; וספק עבירה צריך יותר תשובה מעבירה ודאי, כי יותר מתחרט כשיודע שעשה משאינו יודע ...	Every person should search and examine their deeds and repent from them, during the Ten Days of Teshuvah. A possible sin requires greater repentance than a certain sin, because one regrets more when one knows he sinned, than when he does not know.

משנה ברורה ס"ק ב	Mishnah Berurah (603:2)
ויש לכל אדם וכו' - כתב הרא"ש שיקרא באלו הימים באגרת התשובה של רבינו יונה. והאר"י ז"ל כתב שחיוב ללמוד בספרי מוסר כל השנה, וכן כתב הגר"א במשלי בכמה מקומות, ובמעשה רב. ועל כל פנים באלו הימים יעשה כל אדם כדעת הזוהר שישוב קודם שישכב ויתאונן על חטאיו ויפשפש במעשיו. ועיין ביערות הדבש ח"א דרוש א', כי ז' ימים שבין ראש השנה ליום הכפורים הם נגד ז' ימי שבוע ובכל יום יעשה תשובה על אותו יום...	Every person should [examine their deeds, etc.] - The Rosh writes that during this period one should read the "Letter on Teshuvah" by Rabeinu Yonah. The Ariza"l wrote that it is an obligation to learn Musar works throughout the year, as the Vilna Gaon writes on Mishlei... And at the very least, during these days one should do as per the Zohar, and repent before going to sleep, feel pain over his sins, and examine his deeds. Ya'aros Devash (1:1) - The seven intervening days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur correspond to the seven days of the week; each day, one should repent for [his deeds on] that day of the week [throughout the past year].

שולחן ערוך אורח חיים תרב:א	Shulchan Aruch OC 602:1
בכל הימים שבין ראש השנה ליום הכיפורים מרבים בתפלות ותחנונים. הגה: ואומרים אבינו מלכנו ערב ובוקר, מלבד בשבת.	Each day between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we increase prayers and supplications. Rama: And we recite "Avinu Malkeinu" both evening and morning, except for Shabbos.

שולחן ערוך אורח חיים תרג:א	Shulchan Aruch OC 603:1
אף מי שאינו נזהר מפת של כותים, בעשרת ימי תשובה צריך ליזהר.	Even one who is not careful regarding non-Jewish bread [during the year], must be careful during the Ten Days of Teshuvah.

TIME OF JUDGEMENT

1) Inscribed or Sealed? -

The Gemara (Rosh Hashanah 16a) teaches us that man's judgement is inscribed on Rosh Hashanah, and sealed on Yom Kippur. If so, why throughout the Ten Days of Repentance do we continue to ask to be "inscribed" in the Book of Life? After Rosh Hashanah, shouldn't we should ask to be "sealed" therein?
