Agados of the Destruction

תלמוד בבלי מסכת גיטין נו:	Gitin 56b
וְאָמַר אֵי אֱ-לֹהֵימוֹ צוּר חָסָיוּ בוֹ (דברים לב:לז) זה טיטוס הרשע שחירף וגידף כלפי מעלה, מה עשה תפש זונה בידו ונכנס לבית קדשי הקדשים והציע ספר תורה ועבר עליה עבירה ונטל סייף וגידר את הפרוכת ונעשה נס והיה דם מבצבץ ויוצא וכסבור הרג את עצמו שנאמר שָׁאֲגוּ צֹרְרֶיךָ בְּקֶרֶב מוֹעֲדֶךָ שָׂמוּ אוֹתֹתָם אֹתוֹת (תהלים עד:ד). אבא חנן אומר מִי כָמוֹךָ חֲסִין יָ-הּ (שם פט:ט), מי כמוך חסין וקשה שאתה שומע ניאוצו וגידופו של אותו רשע ושותק! דבי רבי ישמעאל תנא מִי כָמֹכָה בָּאֵלִם ה' (שמות טו:יא), מי כמוכה באלמים. מה עשה נטל את הפרוכת ועשאו כמין גרגותני והביא כל כלים שבמקדש והניחן בהן והושיבן בספינה לילך להשתבח בעירו שנאמר וּבְכֵן רָאִיתִי רְשָׁעִים קְבֻרִים וָבָאוּ וּמִמְּקוֹם קָדוֹשׁ יְהַלֵּכוּ וְיִשְׁתַּכְּחוּ בָעִיר אֲשֶׁר כֵּן עָשׂוּ (קהלת ח:י), אל תיקרי קבורים אלא קבוצים אל תיקרי וישתכחו אלא וישתבחו איכא דאמרי קבורים ממש דאפילו מילי דמטמרן איגלייא להון.	Titus blasphemed, "Where is the Rock they trusted in?!" He took a harlot into the Kodesh ha'Kodoshim (the holiest part of the Mikdash), spread a Sefer Torah, and sinned on it. He took a sword and pierced the Paroches (the curtain in front of the Kodesh ha'Kodoshim); miraculously, blood spurted out. He thought he had killed 'himself' (this is a euphemism for Him), as in the Pasuk, "the enemies roared in Your meeting place; they believed in their omens" (Tehilim 74:4). Aba Chanan expounds: "Mi Chamocha Chasin Kah" (Tehilim 89:9) - Who has restraint like You?! You hear the blasphemy of that Rasha, and You are silent! Tana d'Vei R. Yishmael expounds: "Mi Chamocha ba'Elim Hashem" - who is like You among the Ilemim? (You remain silent, like a mute!) Titus took the Paroches, and made it like a sack in which he took all the Kelim of the Mikdash. He boarded a boat to return to aggrandize himself in his city. "I have seen buried wicked people. They came from a holy place, they go and are forgotten in the city that they did so" (Koheles 8:10) - do not read Kevurim (buried), rather Kevutzim gathered). Do not read forgotten (va'Yishtachechu), rather va'Yishtabchu (they praised themselves). Others expound "buried" to teach that even our buried treasures were exposed to them.

הַקֹּל קוֹל יַעֲקֹב וְהַיָּדַיִם יְדֵי עֵשָׂו (בראשית כז:כב), הקול זה אדריינוס קיסר שהרג באלכסנדריא של מצרים ששים רבוא על ששים רבוא כפלים כיוצאי מצרים קול יעקב זה (אספסיינוס) [אדריינוס] קיסר שהרג בכרך ביתר ארבע מאות רבוא ואמרי לה ארבעת אלפים רבוא והידים ידי עשו זו מלכות הרשעה שהחריבה את בתינו ושרפה את היכלנו והגליתנו מארצנו...	"The voice is the voice of Yaakov, the hands are the hands of Esav" (Bereishis 27:22). "The voice" refers to (screams of the victims of) the Caesar Hadrian, who killed 1,200,000 in Alexandria, Egypt; "The voice of Yaakov" refers to (the victims of) the Caesar [Hadrian], who killed 4,000,000 in Beitar. Some say that he killed 40,000,000. "The hands are the hands of Esav" refers to the evil kingdom that destroyed our house, burned our Heichal, and exiled us from our land.
אמר רב יהודה אמר רב מאי דכתיב עַל נַהֲרוֹת בָּבֶל שָׁם יָשַׁבְנוּ גַּם בָּכִינוּ בְּזָכְרֵנוּ אֶת צִיּוֹן (תהלים קלז:א), מלמד שהראהו הקדוש ברוך הוא לדוד חורבן בית ראשון וחורבן בית שני חורבן בית ראשון שנאמר עַל נַהֲרוֹת בָּבֶל שָׁם יָשַׁבְנוּ גַּם בָּכִינוּ בית שני דכתיב זְכֹר ה' לִבְנֵי אֱדוֹם אֵת יוֹם יְרוּשָׁלִָם הָאֹמְרִים עָרוּ עָרוּ עַד הַיְסוֹד בָּהּ (שם ז').	Rav Yehudah cites Rav: "By the rivers of Bavel we sat and cried when we remembered Zion" (Tehilim 137:1) teaches that Hash-m showed David (who wrote Tehilim) the destruction of Bayis Rishon and Bayis Sheni; "By the rivers of Bavel..." alludes to Churban Bayis Rishon, and "Hash-m, remember the sons of Edom, the day of (the destruction of) Yerushalayim; those who say 'raze, raze it to the foundations'" alludes to Churban Bayis Sheni.
אמר רב יהודה אמר שמואל ואיתימא רבי אמי ואמרי לה במתניתא תנא מעשה בד' מאות ילדים וילדות שנשבו לקלון הרגישו בעצמן למה הן מתבקשים אמרו אם אנו טובעין בים אנו באין לחיי העולם הבא דרש להן הגדול שבהן אָמַר אד' מִבָּשָׁן אָשִׁיב, אָשִׁיב מִמְּצֻלוֹת יָם (תהלים סח:כג), מבשן אשיב מבין שיני אריה אשיב ממצולות ים אלו שטובעין בים כיון ששמעו ילדות כך קפצו כולן ונפלו לתוך הים נשאו ילדים ק"ו בעצמן ואמרו מה הללו שדרכן לכך כך אנו שאין דרכנו לכך על אחת כמה וכמה אף הם קפצו לתוך הים ועליהם הכתוב אומר כִּי עָלֶיךָ הֹרַגְנוּ כָל הַיּוֹם נֶחְשַׁבְנוּ כְּצֹאן טִבְחָה (תהלים מד:כג).	Rav Yehudah citing Shmuel: There was a boat with 400 boys and girls who were being taken for sexual exploitation. They realized this. The girls asked: If we drown ourselves in the sea (to avoid this), will we come to the world to come? The oldest among them said: Yes - "Hash-m... will return from the depths of the sea" (Tehilim 68:23). Upon hearing the answer, all the girls jumped into the sea. The boys made a Kal va'Chomer. The girls took their own lives to avoid a 'natural' abomination; whereas we are being taken for homosexual exploitation, which is a perversion. All the more so, we should take our own lives to avoid this! The boys jumped into the sea. This fulfilled the Pasuk, "For Your sake we are killed the entire day. We are like sheep to be slaughtered" (Tehilim 44:23).

HASHEM IS SILENT

The Sages interpreted the verse "Mi Kamocha ba'elim" (who is like You among the mighty), as "Mi Kamocha be'Ilemim" (among the silent ones). Why interpret this way; what is the connection between the simple meaning and the Midrashic interpretation?
