אֹמֶץ עֲלִיּוֹת קֵרִיתָ עַל קָרִים; אַף יִסַּדְתָּ תֵבֵל עַל בְּלִימָה.	Mighty lofts You did roof over the cold [waters]; even You established habitation upon the void.

דֵּי שָׂחִים וְדוֹאִים מִשַּׁעַל צַרְתָּ; דִּמְיוֹן בָּרִיחַ לְכֵרַת יוֹשְׁבֵי גַנִּים.	An abundance of swimming and hovering (fish and birds) you fashioned from a fistful [of earth]; [the Livyasan] shaped like the straight-beam, for the feast of the [Eden-] garden dwellers.
דְּבוּקַת רְגָבִים הוֹצִיאָה רוֹמְשִׂים וְשׁוֹאֲפִים; דָּר קָנֶה וּבִצָּה לַאֲרוּחַת קְרוּאֶיךָ.	The earth formed of clods brought forth swarming and breathing creatures; [including the Behemos] who dwells in the swamp-reeds, [designated] for the meal for Your invited ones.
הֵכַנְתָּ טֶבַח וּמֶסֶךְ וְסוֹעֵד אָיִן; הִקְרַצְתָּ גֹּלֶם מֵחֹמֶר בְּתַבְנִית חוֹתָמֶךָ.	Thus You prepared food and drink, but there was none to partake! You congealed a form from the clay, in the mold of Your seal;
הִפַּחְתָּ בְחֶלְדּוֹ טֹהַר נֶשֶׁם מִזְּבוּלֶךָ. הֻרְדַּם, וּמִצַּלְעוֹ עֵזֶר לוֹ יִעַדְתָּ.	You breathed into his body a pure Neshamah from Your abode; he was put to sleep, and from his flank You designated for him a help-mate.
וְצִוִּיתוֹ בְּלִי לָעוֹט מֵעֵץ הַדָּעַת; וְהֵפֵר צִוּוּי כְּפֶתִי, בְּהַשָּׁאַת זוֹחֵל.	And You commanded him not to stray [and partake] of the tree of knowledge; he contravened the command like a simpleton, by the deception of the slithering [snake].
וְעֻנַּשׁ בְּזֵעַת אַף לִטְרֹף חֻקּוֹ; וְאִוֶּלֶת בְּצִירִים; וְעָרוּם עָפָר לַחְמוֹ.	He was punished to hunt his livelihood by the sweat of his brow; the deceivable one (Chavah) with birth-pangs; and the cunning [snake] to eat dust.
זֵרוּי רִבְעוֹ הִקְפֵּיתָ בְּבֶטֶן חוֹמֶדֶת; זָרְעָה וְהוֹלִידָה אִכָּר, וְרֹעֵה צֹאן.	His seed you congealed in the womb of she who desired; she conceived and gave birth to a farmer, and a shepherd.
זֶבַח וְשַׁי הִגִּישׁוּ לְמוּלְךָ יַחַד; זָעַמְתָּ בָּרַב וְשַׁעְתָּ תְּשׁוּרַת צָעִיר.	A sacrifice and gift they presented before You, concurrently; You were wrathful upon the older one, but turned to the gift of the younger one.
חֶמֶל רַחֲמָיו שִׁחֵת, וְעָרַף אָח. חִלָּה פָנֶיךָ וְשַֹמְתָּ לוֹ אוֹת.	He broke his pity and mercy, and beheaded his brother. He beseeched Your Presence, and You granted him a sign [of protection].
חָלוּ שָׁלִישִׁים קְרֹא בְשִׁמְךָ לַסֶּמֶל; חֵיל נוֹזְלִים קָרָאתָ וּשְׁטָפוּם וְאָבָדוּ.	The third generation profaned by calling Your Name towards an image. To the army of waters You summoned, which washed them away.
טָעוּ גֵאִים וּפָצוּ סוּר לְנֶגְדֶּךָ; טֹרְפוּ בְּחֹם הוֹמִים וְזֹרְבוּ נִצְמָתוּ.	The arrogant ones strayed and exclaimed before You, "Go away!" They were torn apart by the hot turbulent [Flood waters], scalded and cut down.
טָעוּן גֹּפֶר נוֹשַׁע כְּסָגַרְתָּ בַּעֲדוֹ; טְפוּלָיו הִפְרֵיתָ וּמָלְאוּ פְנֵי צִיָּה.	The one borne by Gofer-wood (Noach) was saved when You closed [the door] for him; You multiplied his children, and they filled the dried earth.
יָעֲצוּ נֶאֱחָדִים לָרוּם עַד לַשַּׁחַק; יֻקְּשׁוּ נֻפְּצוּ בְּרוּחַ סֹעָה וָסָעַר.	The united ones plotted to ascend to Heaven; they were trapped and shattered by whirlwind and storm.
יְדִיד אֲתוּי עֵבֶר יִדַּעֲךָ בָּעוֹלָם. יִחוּם זְקוּנָיו הֶעֱלָה לְךָ לְכָלִיל.	The beloved [Avraham] who had come from across the river, made You known in the world. The child he begot in his old age, he brought up for You as a burnt-offering.
כְּשֶׂה תָמִים בֻּחַר אִישׁ תָּם; כְּחָשַׁק יְשִׁיבַת אֹהָלִים וְנִמְשַׁךְ אַחֲרֶיךָ.	Like an unblemished sheep was the wholesome [Yakov] chosen, when he desired to sit in the tents [of Torah], and was drawn after You.
כֹּשֶׁר חֲנִיטֵי יֹף הוֹצֵאתָ מֵחֲלָצָיו; כֻּלּוֹ זֶרַע אֱמֶת וְאֵין דֹּפִי.	Worthy, beautiful saplings You issued from his loins; all his seed true; none improper.
לְשָׁרֶתְךָ אִוִּיתָ לֵוִי אִישׁ חֲסִידֶךָ; לְהַבְדִּיל מִגִּזְעוֹ, מֻקְדָּשׁ קֹדֶשׁ קָדָשִׁים.	To serve You, You desired Levi, your pious one; to set aside from his stock [a Kohen Gadol] sanctified as holy of holies.
לִקְשׁוֹר נֵזֶר קֹדֶשׁ וְלַעֲטוֹת אוּרִים; לֵישֵׁב כִּכְבוּדָּה פְּנִימָה יָמִים שִׁבְעָה.	To tie the holy crown (the Tzitz) and don the Urim; to dwell like an honored [princess hidden] within, for seven days.

הכנות ליום כפור	Preparations for Yom Kippur
מַחֲזִיקֵי אֲמָנָה, שָׁבוּעַ קֹדֶם לֶעָשׂוֹר, מַפְרִישִׁים כֹּהֵן הָרֹאשׁ, כְּדַת הַמִּלּוּאִים.	The Upholders of the Covenant (the Torah Sages); one week prior to the 10th [of Tishrei] they would set apart the Chief Kohen [from his home], as was the law of the inauguration (of the Mishkan).
מַזִּים עָלָיו מֵי חַטָּאת לְטַהֲרוֹ. זוֹרֵק מַקְטִיר וּמֵטִיב, לְהִתְרַגֵּל בָּעֲבוֹדָה. כַּכָּתוּב בְּתוֹרָתֶךָ (ויקרא ח:לד), כַּאֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה בַּיּוֹם הַזֶּה, צִוָּה ה' לַעֲשֹׂת לְכַפֵּר עֲלֵיכֶם:	They sprinkle Parah Adumah water upon him to purify him. [The entire week] he would throw the blood of the Korban, offer the incense, and prepare the lamps, to prepare himself for the service. As it is written in Your Torah (Vayikra 8:34), "As was done on this day, so did Hashem command to do, to atone for you."
נִלְוִים אֵלָיו נְבוֹנִים יְשִׁישֵׁי שַׁעַר; נוֹאֲמִים לוֹ, 'קְרָא נָא בְּפִיךָ'.	He was accompanied by the wise elders [who sit] at the gate; they would say to him, 'You please read out the verses yourself.'
נֹגַהּ תְּשִׁיעִי, יַעֲמִידוּהוּ בְּשַׁעַר קָדִים; נוֹי זִבְחֵי יוֹם לְפָנָיו יַעֲבִירוּ.	At morning light of the 9th [of Tishrei], they would position him at the Eastern Gate; the beautiful offerings of the day they led before him.
סֶמֶךְ בִּיאַת שֶׁמֶשׁ, צֵידוֹ יַמְעִיטוּ; סַאַב לֹבֶן פֶּן בְּרֶדֶם יִקְרֵהוּ.	Close to sunset they diminish his food, lest white impurity befall him while he slumbers.
סָבֵי שִׁבְטוֹ, לְלַמֵּד חֵפֶן יוֹלִיכוּהוּ. סַמִּים לְתַמֵּר בִּפְנִים, אוֹתוֹ יַשְׁבִּיעוּ.	The elders of his tribe lead him [to the Avtinas Chamber], to teach him how to perform Chafinah. They make him swear that he will set the incense to smoke, only inside [the Holy of Holies].
סָמַר בְּשָׂרוֹ וְהִדְמִיעַ כִּי נֶחֱשַׁד; סָרוּ גַם הֵם וּבֶכֶה הִגִּירוּ.	His flesh would prickle and he would tear up, for having been suspected; they too turned aside and burst out crying.
שִֹיחַ מִדְרָשׁ בְּפֶה וּבִכְתָב הִגָּיוֹן; סְבִיבָיו יְשַׁנְּנוּ לְעוֹרְרוֹ עַד חֲצוֹת.	He would expound [Torah] verbally, and contemplate the written [Torah]; those around him would learn aloud, to keep him awake until midnight.
עָלְצוּ תְּרֹם דֶּשֶׁן בְּפַיִס רִאשׁוֹן; עוֹד יָפִיסוּ לְדִּשּׁוּן פְּנִימִי וּמְנוֹרָה.	They rejoiced to perform Terumas ha'Deshen (of the previous day's ashes), which was the first lottery; further lotteries would be held for cleaning the Inner [Altar] and the Menorah.
עֵקֶב קְטֹרֶת פַּיִס חֲדָשִׁים יְשַׁלֵּשׁוּ; עֲרוֹךְ נְתָחִים יַחַד פַּיִס הָרְבִיעִי.	Due to the incense, they would hold a third lottery for those new to it; and for arranging the cuts [of the Tamid], the fourth lottery.
